Very nice!  Hopefully that is a child's hand, because those are world record ivories if it's your hand.  :chuckle:

I hadn't thought of posting up the ivories from my two hunts.  Prior to this year I had always kept them but never really considered making any jewelry or anything out of them.

When I got my bull in New Mexico this year however, that changed.  When we cut them out and I cleaned them up I couldn't believe how rich in color and nicely matched they are.  The taxidermist said they rank in the top of all the ones he has seen, he's also our meat processor and he had 84 elk in the cooler the day I was there.

The first pic below are the ivories from the New Mexico bull I got this year and the second pic ('cause I got him second) are the ivories from my Montana bull.

I hope the color shows well in the pics.

Simmer in water for a couple of hours.  take all meat / cartilage off.  Now the important part.  3 times through the washing machine and dryer with your wifes lingerie.  BEAUTIFUL !!!

My taxidermist gave me the change in the pocket trick.  That's what I used after cooking them in the Mr. Coffee in my room.

Amazing how the loose change shines 'em up.

Good eye Todd ID. Our two year olds hand. Boy howdy those are some awesome ivories. Ill dig out some older ones we have and post. I hope to see lots of pages of ivories from elk. Antlers are great and ivories seem to always have a back seat. Its time ivories make there stand. :chuckle:

My wife had this made for me for my wedding ring. Every time I look at my hand it brings back great memories and I also think about my wife!

I'm kinda curious how most poeple go about getting the ivories out of the skull. It took me several years to figure out that just hitting the ivory with a hammer or other hard object pops the teeth out immediatly and for how hard the ivories actually are, I have never broke or scratched one.  I cant tell you how much time I wasted trying to pop the ivories out with a knife.  :bash:

:yike: no no cut the gums a little then take the other end of the hammer (claw) and pull it out like a nail  ;)
