I'm back in the saddle again
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:16:34 PM »
I haven't had much interest in trapping in Washington since I-713 passed.  I've been having most of my fun in Alaska.  Got back to WA a couple of weeks ago, spent six weeks in SE AK trapping and just having a good time.  Did pretty good on some beautiful marten, some otter and a few other odds and ends.  Had a wolf break a jaw out of a 114 Newhouse, bummer.
Anyway, got back to WA and was still in the trapping mode,  I have some pre-baits out waiting for some marten to start hitting them, then will go after them with some cage traps I built a few years ago.  In the meantime I built a few muskrat colony traps (6x6x24) and have actually been catching some rats, I can hardly believe it.  It's like learning to trap all over again, I'm having a blast.  Advice would bee greatly appreciated.
I've found that I can't really trap rats where I used to (in slow moving creeks) the traps get clogged up with weeds and grass from the current, any suggestions?  I trap in lowland western WA.
Also it looks like some guys are trapping beaver and otter in colony type traps where can I get plans, etc.
Is there anyway to post pictures on this forum?

Hi Mark,
I think we talked easlier this fall about getting your furs to NAFA anyway. the traps i am using for beaver and otter are swim throughs the door trips when one walks or swims into the trap. but as you can see by my last post they can keep going in if they want to. I don't have any plans but if you want to look at some to get an idea how to build them i could help you out. i would like to see the martin traps you built i might have to try that sometime. as far as posting pics. hit the attachment option on the but of the screen and browse your pictures.

just to fill people in i've been trapping in Washington since the md 80's wags taught me pretty much all i know about trapping martin, bobcat , otter and beaver the rest i learned on the curve and going to the rondy,s  I live up in the sky valley I still trap but not to the amount I used to do with traditional footholds, snares and conibears but i still try and keep my skills honed on nuisance trapping maybe some day we will be able to trap like we use to but for know i am still figuring out the box trap and best methods its just a new learning curve
