Winston late hunt.

So we went 3-3.  Most everyone we talked to during the hunt had filled their tag. So my question is do you guys think they will have this hunt next year? Im sure it was a very high success rate.

A friend and I were just discussing this yesterday and we came to the conclusion that there is no reason that they wouldn't offer the same late hunt next January. For whatever reason, they have determined the elk population needs to be brought down, and I don't think just a one time hunt will have the effect that they are after. Not saying I agree with it, it seems excessive to me as well. But from WDFW's perspective it makes more sense to me that they will have this hunt again next year, and probably for at least the next two years after that.

If you think about it the "easy" hunt, high number of tags and high success rates will be a great thing for the WDFW. Once everyone gets word that the success rates were so high on this hunt think about how many people will apply for this hunt next year! Meaning more $ for the WDFW from permit apps. They know exactly how much revenue they should expect to make off of hunts like these and high success rates historically mean high application numbers which means $ for WDFW.  No way in hell will they pull this hunt in the next three years its just too big a $ maker for them.

It sucks that they put a ton of research into how much $ the tags and apps will bring the dept but really dont know how it will effect the elk. I am no bio but it just seems these late hunts (rifle cow hunts in general) are a terrible idea for the overall health of the elk herd. I would just like to see one study supporting that the Winston's elk population NEEDS to be culled like this.

Let me clarify, I meant rifle cow hunts in these high numbers. I'm sure the WDFW is really happy with the high success rates and I am willing to bet they will advertise this hunt in some way again. Pics on website or regs whatever.

I know the coweeman has the same hunt. Is there a real difference? Does the winston really have alot more elk than the coweeman?

No difference, all the same.  Any of the St. Helens tree farm late Cow hunts are a gimme.  Unless a person absolutely just has no clue, I really don't know how a person couldn't tag out.  Maybe if the person was selective on where they wanted to shoot one, then maybe.

I will say it agin... When you shut down the factory you produce no goods... Good for your freezer this year bad for the future. Most people don't think about ht eyears to come, just right now...

Elk have about a 247 day pregnancy period, so they are a little over a third of the way through the pregnancy.

I sure hope they do not have it or any other January cow hunts but I am sure they will.  I bet they give out more tags.  As others have said it is too much of a money maker for the department.
