Building is quite easy. The key is to take your time and pack your thread! Time will depend on rod length and sections. The longer the rod, the more guides, the more wraps. The more sections, the more ferrules, the more ferrule wraps. If you under wrap the guides then that adds time as well. For me a good wrap on a double foot casting guide with under wrap and double trim band takes me about 45 minutes or so. It is very fun and rewarding to build your own. I use NCP thread to avoid having to use color preserver. Saves a step. I dont buy rods anymore, I build my own
