Rod and Reel advice
« on: February 01, 2012, 06:24:55 PM »
Since moving out here I have been told I need to get on the river and catch some Salmon and Steelhead.  I went with a guy from work and caught a good amount of fish and had a blast.  So, now I am going to set up my duck boat to fish out of.  Going to get two down riggers and need some rods now.  I am under the impression I need and want a 9' rod. So, now I ask you guys, if you had a budget of 250 bucks for a single rod and reel, what you would get to fish these fish?

You can get good downrigger set ups for fairly cheep. I use ugly stik medium heavy rods 8 1/2' and Shimano TDR 200 reels. If you shop around you should be able to get 2 setups for 250 or close to it. Good luck.  Mark

For downrigger rods get some cheap Uglysticks and put the money towards some decent reels.  Shimano, Okuma, Daiwa, and Abu Garcia all make round reels that are under or at $100 a piece that would work great.  Some have line counters, some dont.

Line counters:

Conventionals:

Even some casting reels like the Shimano Cardiff and Abu C3 would work.
