22mag or 17hmr

That is the question. Also, Savage or Marlin. I'm torn between the two. Brand and caliber.

Uses are for grouse, rabbit, etc. And also precision shooting for fun. What do you think?

.22 mag hands down for me. i have or should say had both, sold the 17 hmr.

If you get the .17 HMR, you won't want to shoot anything else!  I have 2 of them--a Savage, and a CZ.  The CZ is better quality overall than the Savage, but the Savage is just as accurate as the CZ, and about a third of the cost.  Plus I like shooting the Savage more than the CZ.  Don't know about a Marlin, so I can't say anything good or bad.

.22mag all the way

i have a CZ-452 Mannlicher, and its a very very nice rifle... but its in .17hmr, and i find it completley useless.... even with the slightest breeze, your shot is going to be off. when ive sighted in perfectly one day, i cant hit anything the next. it is such a light bullet, you have to either shoot it at an indoor range, or on a day with ZERO wind.... while it is my favorite rifle to look at, i havent shot it in 3 years....at least.  the 22mag is a much heavier bullet, and is just way more practical.

I have owned a .22 Mag forever, I picked up several .17's, they were fun but there are all gone. For grouse and such the .17 is fine. But the .22 mag trumps the .17 in all aspects but speed. Killed my share of coyotes with a .22 Mag and CCI Maxi-Mags over the years. Along with a pile of Rockchucks. The .22 Mag killed Rockchucks way cleaner than the .17. I just shoot a plain Marlin 25MN in .22 Mag, very accurate.

I say why have just one?  I have an H&R single shot .17hmr.  I can blow up milk jugs with it at 300 yrds all day long.  I find it to be fun to shoot.  I'd get me a 22mag too if I could.

Hahaha! Wind must never blow where your at and you can drain milk jugs all day long but you sure aren't blowing them up.

Then you must have lived a sheltered life while your .17 was in your hand. The wind is a factor with a 190gr Matrix being slung from my 7mm WSM.

Maybe you're the ballistics expert, but it looks like you need a proofreading course.  You missed the word "significant" in my post.
