Wenas/Cleman mountain road closure?
« on: February 25, 2012, 08:48:18 AM »
Does anyone know if you WDFW closes the gate on Maloy road which would take a person to the top of cleman mountain?  This area is outside the winter elk closure, but was curious if they close these green dot roads as well?  If anyone is familiar with this, i see on the map a road called Jones Rd too which appears to have a non-paved road connecting it that would allow you to bypass the winter elk closure to the west. Anyone know if this road is driveable.

in mid december it was closed , there was no way to get on clemans from the north side , you have to go up 1701 from the south.

I don't think thats outside of the closure for motorized access.    You can hike it I suppose.    Observatory, and I believe that area, I know Bald Mtn access is, closed to motorized vehicle access.

I just picked up this year's Oak creek and wenas map from WDFW. The map doesn't show those roads as being within the closure area, but it does say on there that green dot roads may be subject to seasonal closures that dont necessarily pertain to the protection of wintering game animals, but for the sole purpose of protection to the roads themselves.  THe 1701 road looks like a long ways around.  I'll just hike up from the bottom.  Thanks for the info guys.

Alot of people used to park at the forks (where the pavement ends and splits to Eburg pass) and offload their wheelers and sleds.    I really am not sure where they go with them from there now or even if they still do that.   I suck at road names by the way.  Coach can attest to that, but.......alot of that area is closed to motorized vehicle access and doesn't open up until Turkey season.....might even be May 1st, not sure on that either.   One of my biggest gripes is the observatory.  REALLY sick of wheelers and jeeps going around.   They tore the hell out of the hill by the gate.    I turned a member here in last year and never heard back.   I had hiked 2.5+ in with my kids and here comes this jeep.   Turned out he was a member here and lived in Eburg.    Now that they are doing emphasis patrols, I hope they nail those guys. I felt like placing a photo of his rig, and a note saying I know who you are on his rig in his driveway. :chuckle:     I can relate to all those spouting backcountry tuneups as I was pretty pissed.  No I don't want this to turn into a bashing thread, just added some story to the post. :)

All the roads in the Wenas ( Malloy, Audubon, Obervatory)  open May 1 st. A lot people access via back roads or going around gates with ATV's. More patrols this year and people are being turned-in when observed. I already called in quite a few this year. There are closure signs everywhere but people choose to ignore them

The amount of damage the jeeps and ATVs do up there in the winter and spring is ridiculous. My good buddy is in an Engineer unit in the WA NG and has more than once spent their entire 2week annual training fixing roads damaged from jeeps and ATVs.

I think the state has very valid reasons for closing roads since I'm sure they get sick of spending very valuable tax payers dollars on damaged roads. For the state its alot cheaper and easier to just put in a gate. Which seems to be the trend.

Sorry but I'm calling BS on keys to the gates by Natives.  Don't need keys when its possible to go around the long way on different roads that are open.  I dont partake it that because I believe animals should not be bothered when they're trying to survive.  I'm not stirring the pot just pointing out a fact and I haven't heard anybody up in that area recently but that's not to say nobodies up there.  I'm more curious if they're Yakama or not.

Well from what I heard, the two land owners along Maloy rd were seeing trucks with elk and deer coming down the road in front of there homes., and the gate is closed due to one of the land owners owns the lands between the first gate and the DNR gate.

Now I did hear this a few weeks ago, but I don't know if they are still hunting the area.

I my self did not talk with the land owners, know the person who did, and I believe him......

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the land to the gates is private and I understand they are not allowed to hunt on private property, so if thats the case, where did the animals come from  :dunno:

I didn't say they weren't hunting in the area just saying there are other roads into that area besides the ones that are closed.  It is trespassing if they were hunting on private property.  Again I'm more concerned if they were Yakama or not.
