how close to water source?
« on: March 01, 2012, 07:52:18 AM »
i want to check out some areas that i have been eyeing for chukar/huns but the area has no river or lake or any water source nearby.  there are however plenty of rain guzlars skatterd throughout the area.  are those guzzlars enough to provide a water source for upland birds?   :dunno:

Southern California is covered with guzzlers.  Most of them are a concrete apron to collect rain water and a cistern.  The cistern is covered and the apron is sloped so small animals can get to the water.  I've seen some cisterns in the 55g range and some to several hundred gallons.  Most of them had brush piles nearby to provide cover for the birds and small animals.  To help the animals CA game regs prohibited hunting within, if I remember right 200yds of a water source.

So to answer your question.  If it's a reliable water source the animals will be around it.  However, if it's an intermittent source they may or may not be there.
