Marlin is the same. The deck hand will tell you either "wheel" "Leel" "Reo" or just spin his hand around after handing you the rod. That means reel in American, and do it quick as those fish move fast. If the deck hand tries to grab the rod, let him, as they are setting the hook for ya.
