Shot placement and bullet selection mean far more than caliber. If you can shoot it well, it's a fine caliber.
I used my .270 on my bull this year one shot, one kill. Call and stalk to within rock throwing distance and you shouldn't have a problem.
Guy Eastman killed a nice bull with a 270wsm on this past week's show. He took 2 shots but it looked like both were good shots.Not that that means it's a do-all end-all elk gun but it's all about shot placement. Use it and put your bullets in the boiler room and you'll be fine.
Ask Jack O'Connor what a 270 will kill... I am sure he can list enough animals to make you feel alright about using it as an elk gun.
