13 archery points
« on: March 03, 2012, 09:07:54 AM »
I'm pretty stoked to have 13 points for archery quality bull . I think I'm gonna step away from my normal area and try to get in a bit deeper ! My question is for you number crunchers . There's a unit that only gives one tag out and if I use it as a first choice do you think it hurts my odds for my second choice ? or is it indifferent .Thank's

I'm not a bowhunter but I would shoot for PEACHES RIDGE, Little Naches area.  I know the area and it holds really good bulls. Need more info PM me.

That won't affect your 2nd choice. That's the way to do it. Put a hard to draw permit for #1, and the easier one for #2.

Coach you gotme on the draw system! I'm get to figure it out but that being said if the one tag one is the tag you would rather have make it your first IMO Good luck and I hope you draw can't wait to see what you can muster up  ;)

I almost always put the hunt I really want and think I have a chance of drawing as a #2 (or 3rd or 4th) and throw in some impossible to draw permit as a #1 choice.

Any tag I have ever drawn was always my #1 choice. Funny how the system works...

:bash: Not me! The year before they went to the quality and general apps I lost 5 points in deer by being a dumb a$$ and filling out all 4 choices with a doe tag  :dunno: :bash: :dunno: :bash: :dunno: :bash: Yeah I drew the doe tag the fourth choice  :bash: I'm still pissed! I would have been looking really hard at a good quality hunt right now if I hadn't done that :bash: :bash:

Let me clarify I fill out the fourth choice with a doe tag instead of a ghost hunt

"Ghost hunt"?  You can't put in for a ghost hunt as a 4th choice. If you want to put in for a point, it's your only choice.

400 you get choices in each catigory . why not use them ? like quallity buck , buck , antlerless . one dosn't affect the others points . but if yopu dont allpy you will loose the points for that catigory . Bobcat can map it out for you he must be a bean counter (lol)

I only applied for 2 quality hunts anyways.... (before they changed it) Both would be my number one pick...  :chuckle: Bull hunts I only put in for one.... Cow hunts one sometimes two....

Bobcat, can you clarify on that? So when I put in for moose and I only put down one unit....I can't put down a draw point for my last choice?  :dunno: Is that why I never get drawn?  :chuckle:

It was before the changes in the app process. and I should clarify again  :chuckle: I was stupid and picked a fourth hunt choice instead of just the three buck hunts I wanted and that's what got me the damn doe hunt!!! and it was a whitetail 2 hrs from hm to boot  :bash:  :bash:  :bash: Bob your are right about the ghost hunt I appologize  :hello:

No it does not hurt your chances for your second choice. If they draw your name they look at your first choice if all those tags are already full then they move down to your second choice.

Coach put in for the Colockum tag. You know you want to. Plus this year if you draw that tag you can hunt the Teannaway. Since your in double digits, I would skip all the Yakima units. It would be Blues or Colockum for me.  :twocents:

I think 400out has a valid point don't put in for any hunt you don't want with that many points because inevitably you will draw it.

You don't lose the points if you don't apply, you just dont get the additional point. I have 15 points for Quality Elk and Bull Elk. I will only be applying in one category this year, because I don't want to risk drawing in both categories and losing all my points...  :twocents:

I believe my dad had 11 or 12 points last year for archery quality bull  and put in for peaches ridge, NOT selected. Good luck and you would think you have a great chance but you never know, but you can bet your butt there will be a few guys with 1 to 4 points drawing.

In the 2011 "Quality Bull" category there were 2,687 applicants with ten or more points, and 29,437 with less than ten.  Due to the sheer number of applicants with a few number of points, they do get drawn more than one might expect, but that's generally because there are so many of them.

True but... You know what type of bulls are in the Colockum and where they hang. So since its closer for you and you can better scout it, I would put it as #1. Then put an area in the Blues as #2.

And each year your chances of drawing is getting worse due to the fact that the points are squared; we are all falling behind.  This assumes permit levels are relatively stable and that those who get drawn the previous year are back in the game again.

Do the math and you start getting discouraged.

Are you referring to point creep? I am failing to see why squaring points isn't a fair system when compared to straight points? Can you break it down for me?

I have 11 "archery" points this year for quality and bull elk. Maybe one of these years I will draw something. =)

Did you turn in a poacher coach?  That big beautiful bull you have in your avatar was only maybe three years ago.  If it is an easy spring and wet summer the blues should be the trophy elk area.  Lord knows there aren't any elk in the Observatory gmu.

Or the Blues, Colockum....
As far as the best way to do it, (in my opinion) is think that it is a lottery (?)
you cannot get drawn if you do not apply, and the way it works is.. They put your name (number) in the general pool for what category you are applying for, (you get in as many times as "points squared")
Then they have "the lottery"  if your number comes up, they look at your #1 choice...
If a permit is available
If all those permits have been taken, they go to you #2 choice.. and so on
If you chose only hunts that have already been chosen by those drawn before you, you were "unsuccessful" (even though you were drawn) and you get a point..
There are those that have more point, and do not get the permits they want, because they only apply for the "premium" permits.
Even though "their number" might get drawn, they are "unsuccessful" because they only chose those hunts that have more applicants, I have been drawn Observatory twice with 6 points each time, and as my only choice because that is where I hunted.
If I were to have applied for "the Blues" as my #1, I probably would still have been drawn for my #2 because there are more applicats for that permit., so there would have been no change, but who knows ? I might have been lucky....

yeah ten poacher points , oil poacher too but they only give points for deer or elk in one catigory so I took quality bull. i'm gonna stick to two gmus since i really don't know the blues that well and it's a long haul for me. i've been lucky enough to harvest a few good bulls and be in on some great elk hunts . If I draw a tag i'm gonna set the bar pretty high.
