And each year your chances of drawing is getting worse due to the fact that the points are squared; we are all falling behind.  This assumes permit levels are relatively stable and that those who get drawn the previous year are back in the game again.

Do the math and you start getting discouraged.

Are you referring to point creep? I am failing to see why squaring points isn't a fair system when compared to straight points? Can you break it down for me?

I have 11 "archery" points this year for quality and bull elk. Maybe one of these years I will draw something. =)

Did you turn in a poacher coach?  That big beautiful bull you have in your avatar was only maybe three years ago.  If it is an easy spring and wet summer the blues should be the trophy elk area.  Lord knows there aren't any elk in the Observatory gmu.

Or the Blues, Colockum....
As far as the best way to do it, (in my opinion) is think that it is a lottery (?)
you cannot get drawn if you do not apply, and the way it works is.. They put your name (number) in the general pool for what category you are applying for, (you get in as many times as "points squared")
Then they have "the lottery"  if your number comes up, they look at your #1 choice...
If a permit is available
If all those permits have been taken, they go to you #2 choice.. and so on
If you chose only hunts that have already been chosen by those drawn before you, you were "unsuccessful" (even though you were drawn) and you get a point..
There are those that have more point, and do not get the permits they want, because they only apply for the "premium" permits.
Even though "their number" might get drawn, they are "unsuccessful" because they only chose those hunts that have more applicants, I have been drawn Observatory twice with 6 points each time, and as my only choice because that is where I hunted.
If I were to have applied for "the Blues" as my #1, I probably would still have been drawn for my #2 because there are more applicats for that permit., so there would have been no change, but who knows ? I might have been lucky....

yeah ten poacher points , oil poacher too but they only give points for deer or elk in one catigory so I took quality bull. i'm gonna stick to two gmus since i really don't know the blues that well and it's a long haul for me. i've been lucky enough to harvest a few good bulls and be in on some great elk hunts . If I draw a tag i'm gonna set the bar pretty high.
