OR trappers could use a little help from you
« on: March 09, 2012, 11:07:00 PM »
Received this the other day, Just takes a minute to send a comment.

Hello OTA members,  As many of you may be aware, there have been a number of dogs captured in traps this season. The most notable were two dogs captured in Central Oregon, near Bend. One of the dog owners has started a process to require trappers to post a sign near there trap. A group of people concerned with this issue has been formed.  The process for them is in the planning stage, but they are planning to approach the Game Commission this July to get regulations changed to that effect.
An email writing campaign to the ODF&W Commissioners  has been started by this group. These emails will be assembled for the commissioners as a list of public comments.
This is where we need your help. We need you to write in opposition to placing signs near our traps. Please make your comments, short and polite. This is sort of a numbers game, and at the moment they are ahead.
Some thoughts may be that the sign will mean, trap here for you to steal, animal in trap here for you to steal, trap here for someone to spring and ruin, etc.  Will a sign 30 feet from a trap be off any value to a dog owner whose dog is 50 yards ahead of him. The Oregon Trappers Association believes that education of trappers and the public is needed.

            Email your comments to:          odfw.commission@state.or.us

Thank you in advance for taking the time to send the commissioners your comments.

Dear Commissioners,
I have heard that a few people want trappers to place signs by their traps. I have some real concerns that a sign will simply mean:

1.  There’s a trap here for you to steal!
2.  There’s an animal in my trap here for you to steal!
3.  Here’s my trap for you to spring or ruin, etc.

I doubt that a sign 30 feet from a trap will be of any value to a dog owner whose dog is 50 yards away of him.

The Oregon Trappers Association believes that education of trappers and the public is needed, I suggest you take a more proactive approach in that direction.

Thank you for taking the time to read my comments.
