Encore Pro Hunter Question???
« on: March 17, 2012, 12:01:01 PM »
Some of you know that I just got a new Pro Hunter and I'm having a blast with it. I got the .243, .223, and .25-06 barrels all stainless for it. Last night I was looking at several other barrels online for it.

MY QUESTION:

They make the .460 and .500 in Encore barrels that are 15" and 20" long. Will both of these fit my Pro Hunter Rifle stock and forend? I think it would be a kick to get either with a 15" barrel and a 1-4x scope on it. Good little brush gun.

thanks

I know it works that way with my Encore but I think it's against the law to have a rifle barrel shorter than 24" but not really sure on the legal length. I have the 15" 308 barrel but I use it with the pistol grip and fore end. There's a picture of it on my avatar. My offer is up to $250 now. :chuckle:

So I could just call it a pistol with a rifle stock, lol. I'm over 21 as long as my daughters don't use it.

I got to thinkin about the rifle fore end. It might not work with the 15'' pistol barrel. Have you checked Natchez Shooters Supply for barrel prices? They had a good sale going on a while ago. Barrels were under $300.

I have not I've just been looking on gunbroker.com. I've found several for around $250. I'm going to measure my rifle to see how long the barrel is out past the forearm. Picture that in a .460 with a Leupold scout scope.

The shop your talking about is it online? I'm living in Wasilla AK.

Natchez is online plus they send out catalogs also. Try Natchez Shooters Supplies and see what ya come up with. They have good prices on Nikon scopes too plus all the other brands. I miss Alaska. I worked on tugs up there outta Seattle for 10yrs. We brought the sports arena to Anchorage on a barge. Hope you're having fun with the Pro Hunter. I love mine.

I have a 15" 500 S&W set up as a pistol. Under 16" must be a pistol setup legally (federal law...not sure of state) otherwise must be registered with ATF as a Short barreled rifle which involves a $5 tax stamp and a letter from the local sheriff saying you are a good boy. If you bought it as a rifle it is technically illegal to make into a pistol.  There are legal rifle barrels in 460 and 500 but the pistol barrel is a hoot. I like mine a lot shoots well and hits like a freight train. Trade off is recoil, even with the porting it takes a little practice to get the hang of shooting it.

And to answer the stock question you must have the pistol forend to fit the 15 inch barrels since legally they are handguns.

Looks like I'm going to have to go for the 20" in .460. That should work on critters out to 200yds. Thinking 3-9 Leupold on that combo.

I think 460 will be a good choice. The advertisements for the pistol said it shot to 250 yards with now hold over so I would think 200 yards in a rifle more than double the length would be easily doable. The hornady ftx  is a pretty good bullet to start off shooting and I think you can shoot 454 casull and 45 colt in that chamber as well, at least you can in the revolvers.let us know what your results are, at least I would be interested to hear.
