A lot of guys throw spikes. I fished with a member here last year. He showed me th ropes. Take a dropper line and find a nice size rock. Wrap your like around it and put a piece of tape on it to hold the line in place. That way when you get a fish on and jerk to set the hook it pops the tape off the rock and you are free to fight the fish. Rocks are pretty cheap!

I like that idea.  Let me guess the tape used is duct tape?

I might have to go down to the river and pick some up pre weigh them and get some 6 oz rocks...  Then I just walk down with two bags.  One with my tackle, & bait and the other with rocks pre wrapped in tape.

Yeah it saves a lot of money. You will loose a lot of money if throwing lead for very long down there. There is a real trick to it. Like when I shad fish. If you touch bottom you are probably going to get hung up! Also be ware of oversized sturgeon! They are gear taking sob's down there.

I figured I would run 30 lb mono main line.  30 lb leader, 10 lb dropper line.  That way I get back all my junk.

What are your thoughts?   Makes complete logical sense to me...

I sell all kinds of weights.  cannon balls 1oz-10oz, banana weights 1oz- 5oz. , pyramid plunking  sinkers 2oz- 8oz.  I can ship them also.

You have a price list? I pour my bottom walkers, jigs, and large cannon balls.

Yeah sounds good to me. I think I was running 8 or 10lb test as my dropper line. You will have no problems popping free with that light of dropper. Most times the line will cut the tape before it breaks. Unless you get crazy with the tape.

If you want to save a bunch of money and help the environment, use concrete. You can buy a 50 bag of quickrete for like $4.00or so. Buy a bunch of different size dixie cups and some 20lb dacron or other old line. mix the quickrete and scoop into you cups with a wad of line. Weigh you cups and when you get the weight you want, match it on the rest of your cups. After it sets up just turn over and tap the cup and your weight will fall out. You will have all the weights you could ever want and it wont hurt to loose them. Tie a dropper line with 15lb test or so to the line coming out of your weight and it will break off on the hook set. I did this last year on the Columbia and it worked great. The guy's at Outdoor Emporium told me this trick. It also saves the waterway by not leaving so much lead in the water.

Since you have done this before.  HOW many do I need per day?  I was thinking 24 weights a day.

I don't know if you are talking to ripper or me. I would say 24 would be enough. If you are fishing for like 12hrs you might need more. I rebait about every 30 mins if I don't get a take down or hookup.

Fishing from shore you may need more. I was fishing from a boat and I only went through 5-10 a day. They didn't always break off. I started with 6-8 oz ones and they didn't break off. When the current really started ripping I went up to 24 oz and they did break off on the hook set. I made up 50 pounds worth of different sizes. I still have a bunch left. Take all you have and leave them in your truck. Better to have too many than not enough.

I was sturgeon fishing so I used bigger weights in deeper water. You will get a bunch of weights out of a 50 lb bag! 100 8 ozers anyway.
