Lets talk about coyote dens
« on: March 18, 2012, 05:09:43 PM »
When I go coyote hunting I purposely look for places were coyotes could den.  I have no intentions of waiting by the den for a shot at mom or to kill pups. But part of hunting is observing wildlife habits.  Obviously coyotes know were to hide or they would have been taken out natural selection and we all know that is not happening.  This weekend I walked seven miles in areas were coyotes live by Vantage and I did not see one potential den hole.  WHERE ARE THE DENS?

It does not take much to make a 'den' and they move at the drop of a hat.  Depressions and overhangs in the basalt bluffs are busy.  Look at the base of most any thick sagebrush plant.  A hole you think is to small for a badger sure could hold mom and pups.  Under a draw full of russian thistle is a great site.  They often just disappear, watch close, you'll see them.

I have seen them in hillsides in a valley, in the bottom of a valley, or in the bottom of canyons.
