questions about off road lights and reverse lights

one of my reverse lights isn't working so i was planning on bypassing that whole system and rigging up lights to mount on the bumper, is this legal to do so. I know the extra lights are but is not having the stock lights hooked up legal. Also i know theres a lot of trucks driving around with off road lights mounted to roll bars, i heard that they have to be covered when driving in the city, is that true also? Thanks for any help.

Sure, as long as they work just like the original ones. You could change all of your lights to aftermarket and move them to different locations as long as they still do the same function. I had a friend that did a custom 56 ford pickup and moved all the light except the headlight into custom bumpers.

You can run around with "off road" lights uncovered. I believe that they have to be 65 watts and over to be considered "off road" and then they need to be covered. If you have a Fleet Pride store in your area, they sell a universal light for $12 and its 35 watts, and they have replacement bulbs in 55 and 110 watts. I put 3-35 watts on my front bumper and its like having driving lights. They are about 4" dia and 1 wire, super easy to install. Pay attention to how many amps they draw and use the approriate fuse right off the battery before the switch. Mine is a 15 amp fuse because each light is 4.3 amps

thank guys  :) right now i have a set of "Escalade" lights, the square basic ones, that i put in two 75 watt lights from my 5 million candle power spot light in. So far no problems over heating them or fires. I have them wired up through inline fuses and through relays   :tup:. They are good and bright but the beam pattern sucks being that they're square ones, but im putting in two circle ones for the middle mounts on the roll bar  :IBCOOL:

I have a set of 100W and a set of 55w on the front of each of my rigs and also a set of 55w'ers on the back of each.  I treat the lights on the front as "hi beam" and use them all the time when driving.  When ever a car is approaching though, I turn them off , again just like your normal hi-beams.  I will leave the 55's on if the on coming traffic also has their "fog lights" on .  I have ran this way for years an have never had a problem with LE, even when they saw them on/ then  off when they were the on coming traffic. 

For the extra sets on the back, I wire a separate switch in for them so that they can be turned on at any time ( so separate from your normal shift actuated reverse lights)  By doing this, you can check on a trailer while running down the road, and they make a nice tailgaiter deterant too :rolleyes:.  I mount these on top of the bumper on the outside corners so they clear the tailgate or lift gate depending on the rig.  If you install them under the bumper, don't drive through any ditches.... :twocents:

Northern Tool has the round 100 w pictured for around $12 each with the stone gurard. included.

I sell vision X off road lights, and I hooked up two Vision X Solo Primes on my hitch for reverse lights. They are bright as hell, I can see really well even with window tint backing up. The key is to put them in a place where you dont whack them backing up or hit them using the vehicle normally.

Is that place out of Auburn? I've seen a guy on 167 heading south in the mornings in a Pewter Silverado with a Vision X sticker on the back...that you? I keep looking at your lights for, need to replace the fogs in my Silverado
