remington extraction problem

My 300 rum does not extract cases every time, The gun has about 30 rounds fired through it,new last summer,cleaned several times, worked fine for the hunting season with no problems, Factory remington cases,doesnt matter now if I try loaded rounds or spent cases I get the same results. The extractor on the face of the bolt seems to move in and out but does feel rough when compared to another 700 I have. I've recleaned the chamber and tried oiling the plunger(i think thats what it's called) but get the same results, does anyone have any ideas?  thanks

The extractor is completely different than the ejector, if your talking about the plunger on the bolt face moving in and out that's the ejector. The extractor on a Rem700 is riveted to the inside of the bolt face, Remington has Had issues with their extractors here and there. Thats why I put a Sako extractor on all my 700 builds. If you are up to speed on the way they work, Remington will send you another extractor. At least they did for me. I had a Rem700 stainless .300 Win Mag that had extractor problems right out of the gate last year. Didn't fail to extract all the time, just here and there. I had purchased the rifle through Bi-Mart locally so I pitched my complaint to them.

They in returned contacted Remington and Remington sent them a new extractor which I went down and picked up.I ended up building a custom on that action and had a Sako extractor installed, I still have the extractor if you need it. I can send it your way and you can install it or have a local smith do it.

I bought a Remington 700 300 win mag last summer and with about fourth rounds through it it stopped extracting completely.

I sent it into Remington and got it back about two months later and have had no problems since

My buddy that works up at Kesslrings in Burlington says that Remingtons Quality Control has been slipping lately I would call them and make them take care of it!!!!!!!!

Remington actions are top-notch, but the stock extractor in the bolt face is problematic.  A Sako Extractor is the way to go, but it must be done by a gunsmith that has the means to machine the bolt face to install it.  Some custom gunmakers that are using 700 actions are using AR-15 extractors, too.  Either one is much more dependable than the Remington factory extractor.  Unless you plan on doing a lot of shooting with the gun, replacing the factory extractor might be the way to go.

The rem extractor is pretty simple to swap out, its just a peened over rivet. As mentioned, the ejector has no effect on extraction. You can pull the bolt and look at it. Sako installs are about $100.00

I forgot my disclaimer:  I have 2 Remington 700's, a 22-250 and a .17 Fireball.  No problems with either one, and I have fired probably 500 rounds through the Fireball.  But I suspect the 300 RUM is a lot more brutal on the bolt face.  Those Rem extractor rings are a piece of cake to replace.

I'm not sure it is a problem of the bigger round because my buddy had a 6mm/223 that had these same issues as well as another I believe was chambered in 243. Both of them are gone now.

Hmmm... Sounds like Remington got a batch of extractors with a manufacturing defect.  So much stuff is sub-contracted out these days.

Same problem with my new Remington .257 Wthby Mag... gun smith is putting new (different) one on as we speak.  Never had a problem before with any Remington extactors though, even on big belted magnums?

You get a new rivet.  The old one has to be destroyed to be removed.

If you can run a weed wacker, you can swap out the extractor. Just remember that there is only a small bit of metal on the bolt where you are peening the rivet.

 A buddy of mine has the same problem with a 770 RUM with a custom snout, he was thinkin the smith boogered somethin up. I told him to run a Sako extracter, don't thinkk he's got that far yet... Sucks packin a cleanin rod with ya!!
