pretty good opening day
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:14:53 PM »
started the day of with going to my favorite turkey hunting location and got a bird to gobble walked up the road and a guy has his camper parked under the roost tree and his truck he didnt leave his camp and just sat there in camp and tried to call the bird in.  i told my buddy from alberta canada not to worry will just go up the road a little farther we did and got on some birds but plans didnt go the way we wanted them to . so we got back to my place and went p to my dads treestand and hunted to or buddies place. We just started over the ridge i gave a few yelps and down in the canyon about 100s yards away is these toms gobbling then  2 more started gobbling on the distant ridge so we started working down the hill we got about 400 yards down the hill and one bird that was well over 1000 yards away was already at our feet he was about 150 yards away and i told my buddy will set up here and hell come right in so i gave a few yelps to see where he was he gobbled and then we heard a gun go off. We were just disgraced calling this bird into 700-800 yards to have someone shoot it we walked down the road and here is this old man and his wife. He looks at s and says you wouldnt believe it i drove up the road and this tom was standing here he gave me time to get my shotgun loaded and i shot him. The  old man was real sorry for shooting the bird but we looked at him and said hey its the way hunting is. Then he said for this tom to be up here there must be a hen then i pulled out my mouth call and said here was the hen then he smiled and drove off. Sucked that bird didnt get all the way to us but its how things go. The old man was well in his 70s and tickled pink but the good news is we get to keep hunting
If its brown its down

At least you're in the birds.  I'd rather hear them than not.  Good luck.
