Nothing but Butts
« on: August 01, 2008, 08:10:10 PM »
All I'm getting is butt shots.  Am I set up too close to the trail or is the trigger too slow?

My guess is the trigger time on your camera is pretty slow, the gap between when it senses an animal and takes the picture is too long for being that close to the trail. Try setting it up shooting down the trail or up the trail.

I'm no expert at this thing yet by anymeans but if the trail is from right to left or vice versa there in front of the camers it looks like the animal is pretty close ... try setting it farther away or at a different angle so the animals are coming right at your camera. Also some attractant of some sort (salt lick or deer food) may stop them a little longer and hold them in front of the camera long enough to get the shot you want. Good luck!

Try what skinzner and m_ray said angle the camera so it is looking up or down the trail, so the animal is in the frame or put a salt lick right in front of the camera, they may stop and sniff or lick it a little bit.

What type of trail cam are you using?

Thanks for the advice.  I’ll reset it at an angle to, and a bit off the trail next time.  And I’ll look for a lick and/or some bait.

I usually try to set my camera about 25 feet from what ever I'm expecting them to walk by. If I don't use a bait I will put up something shinny or put a scent out so the animal slows down to. This doesn't seem to scare them. "I've had good luck with my cams.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.
