Just got a private land coyote invite!
« on: August 04, 2008, 12:13:08 AM »
I have been trying to find ways to connect with private land owners, with the hope of being able to hunt coyotes, and perhaps down the road, other animals. I just got an invite to 80+ acres (which are surrounded by Wheyerhouser land) for a coyote killing spree...they are picking off his turkeys and he wants sweet revenge.

Perhaps if I work my charm, I might be able to hunt a few other critters on there (tons of swamp land along with river frontage, etc...bears anyone?! ). Once I get over there (hopefully in a few weeks) I will post some pics...

This should be a kick!

If I give away my secrets...they wont be secrets anymore!

All I know is...it sounds like a sweet freaking gig...

but its near the coast..which will be a bit of a drive for killing yotes...still...I think if I do a good job, I can work out a bear kill or something along those lines..if not..at least I can blast some yotes.

I think I am hitting this plot this weekend...the owner said there are bears there too (which I figured, naturally)... sounds like he is open to letting me take one.

Pics to follow!

Most of my shots are under 100 yards..I am bringing a few other weapons as well...

my .300 wsm for example (bears are there)...and a .22, just thought it would be fun to try and get a head shot with the .17. ;)

I didnt mean to sound like a arss, but I have seen coyotes shot with them and I have had to finish them. As long as it under 100yd it might do the job but I would have to have the bigger rifle with me. Just dont like to see them suffer. :twocents:

Oh I agree with you. Dont want anything to suffer. Hence the .300.... ;)

and I didnt think you were being an arse.  ;) I am pretty sure I would only try headshots with the .17...I am bringing the range of guns cause I am not sure what the terrain will offer...so I wanted a few options.

What is it with me and rain?! I get up there, set up my tent, do the walk through with the land owner...

Downpouring starts...hunt most of the afternoon, evening till dark...downpours all night...

Morning, 600 am, the yotes are howling...off i go...downpouring...

Packed up to leave late morning...still downpouring...(wasnt too prepared for all the rain)

Had one group of yotes call to me from across the river last night...

and 5 other group of howls this morning, but I just couldnt get them to come in. I think the land (where I was sitting) made it too difficult for them to get to me (river here, small channel there..etc)..

did call in several blacktail though...think I will just predator call this year elk hunting/deer hunting...as that always seems to get them to come in.

I did get to check out the Cabelas in Lacey though, so that was cool.

Cool shots.   Seems the deer are always more interested in the calls than the predators!
Had about the same luck.  Did not get to hunt much though.
Will be hitting it for the day tomorrow, just not sure where.  Ususally have a partner, but not anymore, so I am winging it.

Thanks for the update.

Now some "better" callers then myself might say I am wrong, but I would suggest looking at some aerial photos now that you have an idea of the lay of the land. You already realise that it may be hard for them to come in and you may be able to find ways to "help them help you". lol

Good luck on the next trip.

Ya, that pic of the field was actually a salt marsh that fills up twice daily...if that was just a field..I think I would have been better off..but it had a few water ways that made it tough... although there were game trails that led into and out of the mess. Aerial idea is a good one...one I use for beaskies often...

Stupid predator calling...I bought Calling All Coyotes 3 while at Cabellas...freakin Primos is making their money off me...

:)

And then theres you, who gets a yote while just hangin out...;) I was just glad I got responses back from them, it is always exciting to hear it.

Yea, just hangin' out, some would say that.  :hello:
Truth is about the last 3 were all hard earned in some way or another. If it were only easy. :chuckle:

I used arial photos to plan my hunt today.  I was stoked for both bears and maybe youtes.  Aerials are great, but unfortunately I think the whole  :tree1: universe went to the same places I did!
What a bust.  Made a few stands, but no action.
