I've had both a 629Classic and a Redhawk.   I'd take another 629 in a heartbeat, wouldn't buy another Ruger.

Never had any trouble with either one.  The Smith was just far, far more comfortable to hold and shoot.  Probably why I got such better groups with it.  I liked being able to play with the trigger pull too.

I have shot both the Ruger and the S&W and I own just one...S&W 629. granted the Ruger is stronger if you want to shoot really nasty 44 mag rounds like the Garrett's, but the S&W feels much better to shoot both in trigger pull and recoil. If you dont plan on feeding the gun a steady diet of 300gr's or more than the S&W any day.

I've had several 44's though the years.  It all depends on what your brother is going to use it for.  Remember, most of the time you pack them more than you shoot them, and most are a pain to pack after about three or four days backpack hunting/hiking in the hills.

I loved my Super Blackhawk with the 10 1/2" barrel.  Was a joy to shoot heavy loads through and it shot them very well.  Took two elk and 13 deer with it.  I'd still have it but some low-life POS stole it off the boat I was commercial fishing on in Kodiak.

I liked the Super Redhawk, but it was heavy and I just didn't shoot it double action enough to justify the weight.  Sold it.

Had a 44 barrel for my Contender.  Shot well, didn't like the way it felt, and only had one shot.  Traded it straight across for a non-ported 10" 45-70 barrel.

Still have an old 629, and as others have already said; it shoots well, and is comfortable in the hand.  Just don't feed it a steady diet of big bullets with a lot of powder pushing them and it will be alright.  Got two deer and one elk with it.

Bought a 329 from a great guy on this forum and if you want a 44 to pack around with you for a week in the back country, that's the one I'd recommend.  It shoots just as well as my 629 and weighs next to nothing.  I hear they make one now with a longer barrel, I may be looking into that one soon.   I think Taurus has a version of it as well, but I don't know anyone with firsthand experience with it.  Even though I give up some velocity with the short barrel, I still love the 4" 329 just because it hits where I point it and it's LIGHT!

I won't take the 329 to hunt with though.  For my hunting load, I use 300gr. hard cast bullets, (and I'm not going to share the powder charge with you...just know it's a "bit smoky").   I really don't think the 329 will take too many of those loads without doing damage to it.

Just my experience for what it's worth.
