Camp sites and Broadheads
« on: May 12, 2012, 12:38:57 PM »
Hi.  I recently came across this forum and, it really seems to be very informative on W. Wa hunting subjects.  This is my first post so I guess I owe a case of beer (army talk). Any ways, I am going to be a first time bowhunter for elk this year and wondering where some state and Tacoma Power camp grounds are that may be somewhat centralized in the Winston, Mossyrock, Morton and Skookumchuk ect areas.  As you can see I'm a little confused as to where to hunt too.  Another question I need answers for are on broadheads.  I usually shoot Wasp Bullets, for they are  extremely accurate at long distances, but only have a 1" cutting diameter.  Are they suitable for taking an elk since they only have a 1' cut, or am I better off going to a larger head, especially since the shooting will be at considerably shorter distances?

I use slick trick magnum 1 1/8 with 4 blades.  They shoot like field points.
I personally would not take a shot beyond 50 yards and even then he'd have to be standing very still.  (but there are whole discussion threads on how far).   I've had full pass through at 38 and 5 yards.   420 gr setup pulling 65-70 lbs.
Old enough to know better.
Young enough to go for it.

There are a few campgrounds in and around the Winston Unit as well in Mossyrock.

As far as broadheads go I would say the best thing to do is either read the archery regs on line, or pick up a copy at you local sporting good store.  Just to make sure your whole set up is in compliance ( i.e. poundage, shaft length, broadhead cutting size and weight, and total weight of your arrow), better to be safe then pay the Queen 'B'.

1" cut will kill anything that walks. Most 100g heads are 1 1/16" or so. No animal will know the difference between 1/16 of a inch. Shoot what shoots best for you and your setup.

Cant help with the camp ground stuff but welcome to the site

1 inch cut will be fine.   I've killed elk with 7/8 heads.
