« on: May 16, 2012, 07:04:02 PM »
Hey guys n gals that hunt the Wenas area. The Maloy road has been shut down, so far the DNR is working with the new land owner since the Triple B, Bass family ranch sold here a lil while back. My dad has been keeping in touch with the DNR guy that is dealing with the problem so if anyone else has any news keep me posted and anyone else posted please. Hey kirkl I know you are in that area have you heard anything new?

I sure hope they get that cleared up soon, The group I hunt with has been up in that area sence the 40's and it would be a shame if they found a way to close us out now! That makes my kids the 5th generation to use that road as access. I new they closed it after turkey season but it has always been re-opened prior to deer so mabey that is all that has been done again?  :dunno: :'(

it's not new guys. Tommy Bass has had that road shut down for several years. Private Property , Was always open to the public Until he got control of the Ranch. Also Coffins have property in the area.
Lots of other ways to get into the area.
Still Po's this Ole' man that he could shut it down. I've hunted that area as well sense the 40s.

Slenk,

Wonder if were talking about the same road. if you go down malloy rd and it splits the the left and you come to your first yellow gate with a cattle guard then go a little farter to the 2nd yellow gate
that is BBQ flats? That stretch of road from the first yellow gate to BBQ flats and even the next ratty gate has always been open for quit a few years just before turkey season.

Not sure whats going on but the DNR map I have dated 2/2011 of that area has those three gates list as "Gate Closed at Landowner Discression".
Also, The road has been blocked off with ecology blocks and a cable prior to the Yellow gate, where the road to it Y's off of the county road.  That particular part of section 14 is not part of the Triple B ranch if I remeber correctly that belongs to Coffin.  However, logging trucks where using it this morning.   :dunno:

Noted that they were hauling logs out of there today.  Not sure about the gates.   I came down from the top in December and was surprised at all of the verbage at the gate.  If I had come to it from the other side I wouldn't have entered.....but since I was already on the other side of the gate.....I came home.

Yes we are talking about the same road . It all depended on Tommy's mood . After the first yellow gate was Bass's . Coffins didn't start till the second fence. I know quit well the boundrys . I used to gather cattle in the area  years ago. For several different people that ran cattle up there.

Hey Kevinlisa06 I do hunt in that camp and we have never seen that gate closed during elk season and the last several years others from our group were spring camping in there as well as turkey and deer hunting. I know there are a lot of other ways in but they are real rough on the RV's and we really like our camp site.  :) I have several friends who have talking with the new owners as well as Coffin so who knows what will happen. Good luck to everyone that enjoys that area as much as we do and I guess we Will see what happens.

Hey MudBall yeah we camp rite there aswell right along the fenceline at the last gate with the trailers and wall tents. Yeah my dad started hunting there in '72 so he is kinda upset aswell and so am I. We called the Sopers that camp there with ya at ElkDuck and let them know what was going on when we found out. We hunt and camp there a lot during the year so its a bummer to say the least.

Ribka know the land owners in the area, hopefully he will get you all some good info on it.

I do know that they have been keeping the gate closed for the summer and opening it memorial day weekend, at least they did last year, I hunted and scouted the are last year before archery season and thats when he unlocked it.
I camped on Pierson's property and went through the gate every day to hunt up there.

Yes, the road is closed as we all are getting to know. Get involved with us, some of us are going to try and I mean try to put some pressure on the state to get  the essment back to re-open road. Members of the Rocky Mountain Elk, members of Elk Duck and myself along with several others are going to have a meeting in next 10-14 days. Let me know if you are interested in the group or just having word passed on about the closure. Not just elk hunters by horse people and ATVers. A lot of locals in that area use the Maloy Rd. Yes there are other ways in, but are not as easy on RVers.
The state and Coffen's and new land owner possibly are trying to work a land swope deal, we are just not sure yet. What land we don't know yet either.

I just talked to my buddy that is ashbaugs neighbor and asked him if he knew what the deal was. he said since the purchase ashbaugh has  been called alot of bad names and people wouldn't stop running  their mouth so he locked it, was tired of the BS. he said he had planned to put up a cattle guard and gravel the road but not now. he also told me the horseclub is buying the easement.

Thanks for the update. Any and all info is important. Hadn't heard about the horse club trying to buying the easement rights, that possibly could resolve the whole issue.  :)

most likely it will, but you NEVER know. :bash:

Also ashbaugh is a big cattle rancher in the wenas, iv you are ever up in cascade park in the summer and see all the red cows in there with the wavey A on their side, they are his. I wonder if he is going to run them in there for extra grazing land.

Hay buglebuster,
You said that you had heard that a horse group was looking at purchasing the easement across the private land of J. Ashbaugh and C Coffin on Maloy Rd. Would you by chance know which horse group it is thats looking at it. Still trying to get a handle on this. firefighter49

The story I was told is that people were in there cutting fences, ripping down different gates, and leaving trash behind so he got fed up with it and locked it up.  Pretty sure that isn't a county road but private so not much to do but bitch about it, I could be wrong about the road though.

My dad knows him pretty well and I'm pretty sure he will follow up with him sometime.
