Personally i would need more info than what is posted to sign that petition. I think it is a shame that Hydro power is looked at being the problem for many things... Power comes from some where, I think dams are the cleanest safest way...  :twocents:

I don't know much about that area but I'll say this.  I am a HUGE hydro power fan.  Our state seems to be against them and says they aren't "green".  To me, it's liquid wind.  I would much rather see 20 more dams than one more windmill which is a dollar trap and apparently is supposed to make people feel better.

I too can't sign it.

i would have to say that we have enough dams, wind ect.. in this state. if i remember correctly, the pwr companies are selling tons of electricity to other states, calif being the biggest user, so wa should be producing more than enough for our own needs. I dont care if the excess gets sold off but i see no reason to distroy an ecosystem in this state to create additional power. especially in a system that is being designated for protection by the state legislature & nominated for fed protection by the usfs.

the OP might know the most on this, but I'm not sure this project is about fish or power.  I had read somewhere that it is mostly about getting some federal money or some tax credit.

I kinda understand the blowing of the wind river damn because they couldn't upgrade it with a fish ladder to meet the renewing of the lease. I  Have not said yea or nay just that the information given is not very detailed. I would assume that a fish ladder would be a requirement for  a new dam. likely one with all the updated knowledge about them... Do we need it? Don't know, Not enough info as to why its bad.  :twocents:

Even if fish can go up, sediment and wood debris usually can't travel down.  From what I've been hearing through grapevines is that it isn't too far in the future of having submerged tidal turbines in the sound that could in theory power most of the west coast...but it will probably cause whales to lose sleep.  There are a few biomass plants ready to go other than court blockages--supposedly burning slash in a power facility is worse than coal.  The power has to come from someplace...just have to decide which form you prefer I guess.

I agree that more nuke plants need to be built.

This dam doesn't sound like a good idea though.  I don't see how they could get through a SEPA determination to get the go ahead.  Seems like the fact that there are Kings in the river would eliminate it from a possible hydro dam.  Maybe they have a good design for a fish ladder???  Doesn't make sense these days to be proposing a dam where salmon are involved.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Please get educated on how dams effect native fish runs. I like to catch natives & not just hatchery fish. Dams are not good for fish I could give u a list why.

Fact is.......it isn't ALL about the fish.  IF it was, we wouldn't eat them, net them, etc.  When I was a Fish and Wildlife major in college, we toured the Dwarshack dam.  Now....it's been some time, but I recall on that tour that it was a kill facility.  ALL fish were killed and harvested for their eggs and milt which was run through their hatchery.  All fish.....want to talk about natives?

I'm not talking about the Cowlitz.  I'm talking about the snake river.

Dworshak hatchery raises cold-water fish species: Clearwater River ‘B’ run steelhead, spring Chinook and coho salmon.  IF you kill every fish, it must be true then that of ALL the fish you kill, everyone has been clipped.  I'll leave my thoughts on where our tax dollars are going to myself (on this thread).

The dams make Eastern Washington some of the best and highest producing ground in the world.  Without the dams and canals, it would be jackrabbits, coyotes and sage.  There is no action without it's consequences.  But....for me the idea of breaching dams is right up there with making Obama our long time dictator.  Both horribibly foolish.

It is not all black and white.  The salmon runs of old were out of this world.  But, like I said earlier, it isn't only about the fish.

the sky and colubia arent even close to being the same.

thats really too bad about dwarshack. thats something i would not like to see over here. the wild runs of the sky are dwindling, adding a dam to this streach of river would (no pun intended) damn wild summer and winter steelhead, and wild chinook.

But....for me the idea of breaching dams is right up there with making Obama our long time dictator.  Both horribibly foolish.

once again, not talking about breaching a dam here...

right i understand that but this dam is going to ruin PRIME wild fish spawning area. ive caught lots of wild summer runs up there over the years and i have to say they are pound for pound the hardest fighting fish i have ever hooked. it would break my heart to see this happen.

It would be nice if they would finish the fish ladder at Sunset falls since it is something like 40 or 60 percent done problem is they will have to build one around Canyon Falls. But instead they have been trucking the fish around these falls for 40 + years.

Might be some benefits here:
Project Benefits Include:
•It’s a non-polluting, renewable resource, with no heat or noxious gas releases.
•Provides energy at the times of the year when it’s needed the most.
•One of the best priced renewable energy sources available.
•A locally generated resource right in the PUD’s backyard, minimizing the need for expensive new transmission systems.
•Upgrades to the trap-and-haul facility would ultimately increase fish populations by improving the health of fish being transported upstream to 90 miles of spawning habitat, currently accessed by more than 25,000 fish annually.
•PUD funding for the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife’s trap-and-haul facility would provide stability for operations and maintenance of the facility for years to come

Skyval,

Where did you get that info? Anytime we start messing with mother nature there are going to be unforseen negative impacts. Who woulda thought putting dams in would ruin wild fish returns when dams were first being introduced? They will provide funding to wdfw for "years to come." How many years? 5? Until the fish stop coming back?

I'm with tikka on this issue, no price is worth it.

Simply put, we have enough of a surplus of power already that we are selling it out of state, why do we need to further damage our local ecosystem to make power?
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
