It's only too many if you can't afford it or don't have the vacation time to go.

WY is about 40-50 bucks per species to build points.  Idaho has no points and is random draw every year, have to buy a hunting license.  MT has points and you have to draw a NR elk tag to apply for LE permits.  I have no idea on the other states how much it is.

Probably a good start is pulling up their state websites and figuring out what you have to do in order to accumalate points.  Some states you have to buy the hunting license in order to get points, others you don't.

My 2 favorite states are Colorado and Nevada. Colorado is pretty cheap. Nevada you have to buy a license every year, but its probably the best state for a quality hunt. Utah you have to buy a license, but it you do it smart you only have to buy it every other year. New Mexico and Idaho have no point system but you have to buy a license. Arizona has great quality but you have to buy a license every year also.

I look at the states with a point system as an investment, and the states without as gambling. Eventually your points will pay off. And if you feel lucky then apply for states with no point system. Idaho does have the best odds for oil species though.

Hope that helps a little.
