My Bro in laws bearski
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:57:43 AM »
My bro in law bagged his first bear ever...earlier this week. It weighed in at 165lbs. Not much to tell here....him and my lil bro went looking for bears in the hills outside of mt vernon,...phil spots this one...end of story. they were only out there for like 20 minutes. Dont recall how far the shot was...sorry for the lack of details.

Can I be part of your family Douglas?  You guys seem to be having good luck this year!
Looks like a pretty nice coat on that one.

Very cool. Did you measure it? Looks like an old one by the looks of the teeth. I jealous, I want to get back out there!!!

Details: My brother and i went out early Saturday morning. we decided the night before to head up to a spot between Concrete and Sedro. After hitting the road later then expected we both decided on going instead to a honey hole of mine that i have seen three bears in since the 30th of July.
Opening day after work i was up in this area without my own rifle, Sayleen and Johnny were out hunting that day and i let Johnny use my rifle so i end up with a 30-30 open sight. i saw a small sow about 45 minutes in to the hunt and about 300 yrds away. i watched her pass through the clear cut while she kept looking to my right. Soon after she left the clear cut a i heard a bear moving into the area from where she was looking. i waited and waited for this bear to come into an opening but as in many washington clear cuts it was just to thick so see anything. this bear got within 30 yrds of me making noise the whole way. Then just as sudden as the noise came it went and the woods became silent. i waited for 30 min without so much as a sound then all of a sudden a rather large bear was right in front of me at 20 yrds. i dont know if the bear saw me or smelled me but he was gone in a flash.
This brings us to my brother-in-laws bear. i told him about the encounter the night before and had him juiced for a morning hunt. we hike(more like walked considering the distance we went) up the logging road and almost bypassed the first small clear cut but i told him about a hiker whom i talked to a couple days before and how he has seen bears in this small clearing. we slow down our walk but not to a snails pace by any means. half way through the clear cut a huckleberry bush gets rattled in front of us about 65 yards away. we both stand in the roadway wondering what to do next when this sow comes down the hill and heads straight to the road. i noticed this bear immediately she was the first bear i saw in this area a couple days before (sayleen has video of it). i told my brother in law that this was a bear i had seen in there before and to take the shot. one shot from my dads browning 280 and a 10 yrd roll to the road and it was all over. she weighed 184lbs and was measured out to be 5'9". it was a great day in the woods for a 15 minute hunt.

Good job guys!

Those yellowed and worn teeth are a sure sign of a mature bear no matter what it weighed. Congrats.
