243 for yotes?
« on: May 31, 2012, 07:18:28 PM »
Im lookin at gettin my daughter her first gun but also wanting a new varmint gun.  Was thinking of a 204 for yotes but a 243 would be a great gun for her but would it be to much for yotes??

That would be a great gun. It is not to much for yotes, and many people use that gun.

No, and she can use it for deer if she ever wants to do that.

Look into Hornady V-Max for a .243 varmint round.

I shoot 95gr SST SUperformance Hornadys through mine to buck the wind over here.....so sight in is also good for deer.  Its topped with a 6-18x40 VX-11.

A .243 is a great all a round gun. I bought one for my girlfriend, she has killed deer, elk, and bear with it. When ever we go in the woods that gun is with us. I use it for predaters in the off season, have got a few coyotes and a couple of bobcats with it.

That can be true with any caliber- I've hit bone with a couple shots out of the 22-250 and left some nasty wounds on the exit. 243 would be an excellent choice.

When i first started hunting i had a 243. it is an awesome all around gun, i shot 3 bucks with it and knocked em all down within 20 yards of where they stood except one that i just barely clipped in the lung that ran like 80 yards. plenty of knock down power and it also doesn't kick too bad which is perfect for a beginner because a gun that kicks can turn away some people.  :twocents: i loved mine and the only reason i upgraded to a 7mm ultra is to reach out a little further. i would definitely reccommend it

Those 7mm ultras are nice but the 25-30 lbs of recoil gets annoying after 5-6 shots. I had the STW but sold it.

.308 not bad choice either.  I have a Remington VTR 700 .308 with the Blackhawk Axiom recoil reducing stock.  It is an adjustable stock for my 13 year old and shooting Hornaday Special lite 125 grs it is a *censored* cat for recoil.  However it is wicked on accuracy.  It will shot better than I will ever be able to.  It is my long range go to gun for yotes.  .308 cheap ammo for plinking and good deer gun.  I haven't shot the .243 but read a lot of posts from varmiters and yote hunters that like the long range knock down power.

I shoot a .243 w/ 55gr ballistic tips for yotes,  It does a good job on them for sure.  not bad on the pelt either.  I run mine very hot, about 4100 fps.  For deer I run the 95gr berger vld
