everyone always talks crap about traditions vorteks but I love them, My wife, father, and I all have one and have never once had a mis fire.  keep them clean and change the musket breech out for a number 11 and you'll never have a problem. 

Accurate out to 200 yards, dropped my bull at 150 yards last year no problem.

I have owned cva, traditions, winchester.   They are all made by the same company and they are not made in the usa.  They are built cheap and feel cheap when you are holding one. To each there own.  If you go with the knight you will not have to end up buying two or three until you  FINALLY BUY A KNIGHT. just my

My X-150 was made in Spain and is as solid as they come..... Very easy to maintain along with accuracy that I've never had with any others...... My Dad has a Knight..... That's all I can say about it....

I love my TC Black Diamond XTR in .50cal.  That thing is AWESOME!  I have killed 2 deer passed the 150yd mark.  One at 165 and one at 151.  (The 151 is still passed 150 right  )  Not sure if they still make them.  If they don't you can't go wrong with a Knight.  Made in the USA and a very quality piece of equipment.  For your son I would recommend the Knight Wolverine.  It wont break the bank and my family has killed dozens of animals with this weapon.  Depending on how young he is the Little Horn is also a good gun.  Whatever you get make sure that it has a 1:28" twist.  Much more accurate and you can shoot almost any modern muzzle loader bullet out there.

With the Knight Extreme, how does its ease of cleaning compare with the Remington?  Thats the only front stuffer that I have experience with....

To be honest with you it is about the same when using a cap for ignition.  The breech is going to get dirty.  The bolt cleaning and spring maintenance is almost non-existant with the Knight bolt and it comes apart with no special tools.

Now I am a real fan of the Knight but again being honest if you have a Rem 700 ML in good condition shooting caps - I do not know if you are making a huge leap forward with the Extreme. BUT, if you were to go to 209 ignition - that would be a very different story.

I have two Knight Bighorns (I loved the first so much I bought a backup).  I have not shot the Disc Extreme but from Sabotloader's reviews I don't think you can go wrong with that either.  The Knight is a well built and accurate muzzleloader that is made in the USA.

I have also read numerous posts about the Traditions Vortek being garbage but I love mine.  Mosts of the posts against this muzzy seems to be that they had a tendency to go off when you would shut the breach.  When I called the company because I had a friend that also had one but had the NW edition (#11 cap) vs. my NW Magnum Edition (musket cap) and he wanted to switch the plug over to a musket cap.  The company adimately pleeded for him not to do this because even though the threads are the same and they look the same there is evidently a 300th of an inch difference in the length and they are not interchangable.  This is why they have been going off.  I am a guy and by nature I am normally against reading the instructions but they clearly state in the instructions when you buy this gun that they shoot only the type of cap that comes with the gun.  If you buy the NW Magnum edition I don't think you can go wrong.  I am a Knight fan as well but I like the feel of this gun and the ease of cleaning that if presents.  I have been shooting a 300 grain powerbelt pushed by 100 grain  Pirodex pellets and have had great accuracy.
