first carp and...

So I have recently got an entry level bowfishing reel (Cajun Archery)and went out to try my hand at some carp.  About the fifth shot I hit a pig of a fish and the line started sailing.  When I tried to grab the line i missed and went I tried to grab it again the line was gone, it had never been tied at the manufacturer (prespooled supposedly) and my fish went off into the abyss with my setup and left me with just the spool.  What gives?
Anyhow I now have 200 yds of Dacron and another arrow but anyone have suggestions on how the heck you wrangle the fish in when it feels like the line will slice through my hand?  Any help is appreciated.

Gloves?     I use one with a real so that i don't have to hand over hand it.

Ya, I drool over the ones I see on here but wasn't sure if I should dive headlong into the fun and debt that comes with it all.  Well now I do beleive I should, but I am having a hard time locating them around the Ellensburg area.  I guess I'll have to wait until I order it off the internet.

Your best bet is to spend the money and get an AMS retriever. At $15 to $20 an arrow you will have paid for the retriever in just 4 or 5 lost arrows. Most sporting goods stores lack a wide range of bowfishing supplies. Take a look at bowfishing shack or bowfishing extreme online. They have great prices, are usually cheaper than a local store, they have just about everything you can imagine for bowfishing and the ship within a week.

Make sure you tie it off to the bow for now and have plenty of line on the reel to make sure you have time to grab it. Start saving you $ you will never look back if you pick up a ams reel

An AMS retriever deffinitly is the ticket. We use 200# fast flight in our spinners and occasionally have to hand haul them in the last few feet. I'll put athletic tape on the last knuckle of my pointer and pinkie fingers. It saves you the pain of a real bad slice. Gloves just get too wet for me. Congrats on the sticking one!!!

I tried the gloves and they definately got wet. I don't have one yet, but the reel is the way to go.  Having to watch fish swim by is painful   Do the AMS reels attach to where your sight typically mounts or is there a quiver mounted one so I can keep my sights on the compound?  This is getting addicting and I am driving around with a bow and a rod in hand looking a fool. They mount to your sight holes on your bow. If your sight has holes for a quiver that will work as well. But it moved the trigger a little farther out on the bow and makes it a little harder to get your finger on the trigger to reel the line. It will still work either way.
