Headed to Wenaha East with bow this Sept!
« on: June 09, 2012, 12:33:17 AM »
Have turkey hunted over in that direction but this will be first time chasing four-legged critters there. Should be a great time and hopefully will hear some bugles which is good for the desk jockey soul.  :)

Congrats on a great tag that was the hard part. Now get in the best shape of your life and you will have an awesome hunt. Hopefully pack animals are part of your plan? I will probablly be in there too. nwhunter

Oh and if you are thinking about an outfitter(Western Life Outfitter/mtcook is the permitted one in there) you better hurry and get ahold of him. With all the tags in there this year he will fill up quick. I know the best camp(my opinion) is already taken for a guided hunt. nwhunter

That's my plan every year, but every year reality kicks my a ss with not selected. I would love that tag as well, have fun. I will be doing a drop camp with him someday that's for sure, it's a pretty fair price to have a camp already for you to go in the heart of elk country. Good luck with what ever you do.

My co-worker was selected for the archery tag as well.  he is nervous as all get out already he was down there this past weekend checking it out and was wondering if there was anybody he could talk to about what the trails are like for horses.  He looked over the tops of the ridges and was comfortable with that part but just was curious about heading down to the bottoms with horses and if it was out of the question.  I told him i would ask the question to best source i know and let him know.  I don't know the area and focus my efforts in other places but any help on conditions getting him in and out safely with his horses would be appreciated thnaks guys.

I've been in that area a lot from the east side by Troy, OR.  The trails in that part get cleared out most years, so the horses should be fine.  It is at least a 3.5 mile trip straight down to get to Crooked Creek (the boundary) and further than that to get into the good elk area; so horses would be really nice.

Wow that is a long trip. Is Wenaha a wilderness area?

Yep.  Don't have to worry about closing roads if there are none :o

 :chuckle:  8)

I'm getting up there in points. I might have to start putting in for Blues permits. Of course I might have to bring a pistol just in case the BMM shows up :chuckle:

I hiked all the wenaha and crooked creek trails this spring.  It seemed pretty smooth going for horses from the bottom.  Trails from the top tho idk? :dunno: Good luck with your tags. Its big country.
