Margaret bull
« on: June 10, 2012, 10:40:47 PM »
I got drawn for the Margaret bull tag in september. I am very stoked. I have a friend that got drawn for the tag and I will be quizzing him but would appreciate all the info I can get.

Should be a pretty easy hunt unless it gets shut down for fire danger.  I had a muzzy cow tag in there last year.  And I saw and heard a lot of bulls.  A couple I saw were pretty nice.  Maybe 270".  The one problem with the margaret unit is that dang near the whole unit is a jack fir patch.
Good luck and welcome to the site.  I hope you stick around.  :hello:

Be careful when you shoot your bull, there might be 2 or 3 other elk standing behind it! I was in there with a good friend last year for his cow hunt and we covered a lot of ground, didn't see an elk for a long time but once we found them they were in a huge herd. He killed his cow just up from the river by the winston boundry. Sept. should be very fun in there, good luck.

:yeah: On Bulls along the Green   I haven't been down there for a while but we always ran into bulls along the Green / Winston Boundary.  Always saw sign up around the Dinosaur Swamp too. :twocents:

Its never EASY to get an elk with a bow. Be prepared. My advice is to cover ground and be ready at all times. I had a cow tag in there in 07 and had many chances blown due to  not being ready. Great learning experience. Goodluck! I wanted that tag so since another Huntwa member got it, I better be seeing some pictures come september while I am hunting the well pressured public land nearby  :chuckle:

He drew the rifle tag.  Should be a slam dunk.

:yeah: slam dunk for sure, can't you hunt the general season dates with that permit also, Sept and Nov?
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

Problem now is access. Weyco has sold off the really good elk country by the Hwy and the High Lakes.  Heard the developer is going to charge for hunting access. The next chunk across from Castle Lk. Viewpoint is also sold with gates posted No Trespassing.  This blocks most access from the Hwy.  So now you have to hope/beg/pray that King Weyerhaeusr has some Green River Access open. Which means pray for rain in Sept.

I also heard that the best hunting grounds got sold. I am hoping I still will have access on the 26

:yike:That is the piece they sold?  :bash: :bash: :bash: That was one of the best elk hunting spots in the unit in my opinion. I had a little spot i hunted in there that was only a couple miles big and I would be in elk all day long every day
