If you take the Racehorse creek logging rd up to the gate it gets you a bit closer than the canyon creek gate, but its still mtn bike, horse back, or walking only from there (4-6 miles to the lake). Also its mostly Sierra Pacific Industries land beyond the sign for the Canyon Creek Community forest sign. They allow hunting but no overnight camping, no motor vehicles, and no fires. So, if you plan on hunting out that way prepare for a long day, and to pack out what you get on foot (or bike or horse). I have seen a bunch of bear sign out there lately and in talking with the loggers out there they say that they see them a lot and have problems with them stripping bark off the newly planted trees. Also take note that there is no hunting allowed in the Canyon Creek Community forest! (fishing isn't bad though if you like little trout).
