Solo high Buck Hunt-GMU 418
« on: July 14, 2012, 04:07:00 PM »
Hi All,
I have been hunting in 407 and 418 for years, but have spent little time going in deep.  Mostly because I am out of shape.  Now though I am making it my goal to become a solo back country hunter.  I am looking to hammer down some huge blacktail in GMU 418.  So far I have gotten some nice pics, but no luck on harvesting.  My main access has been up Glacier creek rd, but I am looking for more areas in which to hunt.  last hunt I had was out of canyon creek all the way up by the border, the only thing I found was a 400+ black bear and no tag.  Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Chris

If you take the Racehorse creek logging rd up to the gate it gets you a bit closer than the canyon creek gate, but its still mtn bike, horse back, or walking only from there (4-6 miles to the lake). Also its mostly Sierra Pacific Industries land beyond the sign for the Canyon Creek Community forest sign. They allow hunting but no overnight camping, no motor vehicles, and no fires. So, if you plan on hunting out that way prepare for a long day, and to pack out what you get on foot (or bike or horse). I have seen a bunch of bear sign out there lately and in talking with the loggers out there they say that they see them a lot and have problems with them stripping bark off the newly planted trees. Also take note that there is no hunting allowed in the Canyon Creek Community forest! (fishing isn't bad though if you like little trout).

Thanks for the resources guys.  Nice buck!
Does anyone know if grouse butte area or those drainages worth anytime?  Seems like you can get some good access in up glacier creek rd?  Also, are any of you bow hunters?
Thanks,
Chris

Also....How crowded are these areas?  I have hunted in Teanaway and it is a shooting gallery down there.  I am looking for deeper country and less orange hats.  thanks

Yeah, any of the areas with a trail get hit pretty good. The hippies are worse than the flies! Also, you drove past some awesome country to get where you've been.

rifle this year...bow hunting there on after though I hope.  I didnt know the hippies were such an issue?  I assume they stick to the roads (tree huggin).  What would be an average size of deer coming out of these hill outside of Glacier?  Cboom is that buck you shot there a 5x5? was he 165lbs or more?
