So I drew a late season Siouxon bull tag and I'm just wondering if any of you guys can tell me what the quality of the bulls are down there so I know how picky if at all during the early season

There are some really nice bulls there, but with as much brush in the area i would not pass on too much in the early season. Rifle season hit it pretty hard so if I called in a mature bull in the early season i'd stick it... I used to rifle hut that area and always wanted to bow hunt it... I may in the future...

Do you know if the rifle guys hit the wilderness area very hard that's where I'd like spend my time weather permitting of course

  Lots of the areas i hunted you didn't have to get more than 1/2mile off the road to see elk.

Indian Heaven gets hammered durring rifle. I drove around during rifle as I was just curious what the pressure is like for modern....(I archery hunt) and I was shocked. Maybe thats normal, but i have not been in the elk woods for 15 years during modern...fricken scary zoo!

Indian heavens is small and surounded by roads. Guys camp for rifle and archery all around it and hit it from every trail head. But trails are like roads and many guys never step off them.

Its just a regular every day general season elk unit. Personaly I think they made those tags just to fill out the catagories with some choices.

But....... there are lots of elk and a very good chance of snow. I've seen some good ones in there. I wouldnt pass on anything legal myself, but thats just me.

If there is a heavy snow year the late season would have lots of elk down in the flats near the hatchery.

Yes, rifles hunters hit Indian Heaven hard and take quite a few bulls there every year.. Mostly small ones but there are some nice bulls also.  Send me a PM and I'll give you an area in the wilderness to perhaps, "enhance" your odds.  RJ

Had that tag last year. There was alot of snow and it was that slushy, slippery, smash your truck up kind of stuff. Make sure you bring chains. We hunted in the surroundn area by the hatchery. There is alot of elk for sure. We were out of the truck on the first herd before we had our camp out of the truck. But we couldent get on the bulls. Finally we were on to a couple bulls at the end of our hunt but we couldent close the deal. I wish I still had those points to put in for the Margret!

all the area around the hatchery is private and they dont give permission ive know the landowner for over twenty years and i cant even hunt it and am very good friends with his family but if there is snow at all you will not be able to get to the wilderness as the last weekend in rifle season is tough going with snow

It's one of the departments b.s. Tags that gives you a snow balls chance in hell of actually killing a bull.

This is a true statement lots of private land. But you dont have to go to high to get in behind it. Most of the private land was well posted but make sure you know whats legal.

In my opinion you have a pretty decent tag. It's not a trophy type tag, but a better than average chance at a bull tag. I'd gun for any legal bull and if you happen into a good one then all the better.
I always liked right around the Wart and red mountain in the heavens, but also spent a bit of time around the racetrack and the southern end of it. Always seen elk, but the 3 points proved elusive.
