snowshoe hare question
« on: September 23, 2012, 02:22:20 PM »
So i shot a snowshoe hare yesterday and it has a smell to it kinda like a gut shot deer. I didn't puncture any organs while cleaning it. I have never eaten a rabbit before, is this something that vinegar and water will fix or is it a sign of something else. I have heard people say that some rabbits are not good to eat.

How soon did you clean it after you shot it?

Rabbit/hare guts just plain stink!  Don't worry about it, rinse it off well and enjoy.

You could soak it in milk overnight.  Worst case scenario, you cook it up, take a bite, and have Top Ramen for dinner.   :chuckle:  Vinegar will add vinegar flavor whereas milk is suppposed to draw out the strong taste.  I've never done the milk soaking thing myself.  Good luck.

Soak it in cold water and a little table salt you can add a little vinager if you want. Yes, skinned rabbits have a ...... smell. Just check the liver for spots. Fried up their great. {Better than chicken}
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.
