most "SPORTER" uppers mean there is no forward assist, dust cover or dust cover engaging bolt, commercial buffer tube, 18in barrel

be careful when using a different upper and lower when it comes to colt, they have different pin sizes and wont always mate together.

The larger pin size on Colts refers only to the trigger group pins, not the take down pins. Colts are 100% compatible with any other manufacturers mil spec parts.

:)I don't know crap about Ar's but here is my experience, never built one. I bought a few and shot a few. I had a Oly K16, very accurate, fat barrel total NO balance, not comfy for me. Do not like shorter than 16 inch barrels( 16 is really too short for me) they are noisy!! WHAT! :chuckle:, The stock that adjusts is cool but hard for me to shoot well. Flat top for sure. Get a REALLY good lower, good trigger etc. Make sure is is not too heavy.
I just bought a R15 Remington from Cabelas for $900, 18 inch, 6.5 lbs so far is quite accurate, light and fun to shoot. Killed one coyote with it so far. I tend to hunt big game with bolt guns, love my 300WM!! :chuckle: :chuckle:

Been looking grendel.  My next question is barrel length.  How long is your barrel, and what is your use?  Trying to decide for myself.

Though I have never used a Grendel I have used AR's for a very long time for hunting. I prefer a 20" barrel but an 18" may suit you better depending on barrel contour (weight) The 20 seems to put the blast just far enough away that it is somewhat tolerable to shoot a time or two without ear protection if you had to. 16 inch barrels or barrels with brakes are just friggen loud  :yike:

I feel that the 20" gives you the best of options depending on your physical height. If you are 6"-2" plus, a 24 inch barrel should be okay but if you are 5'-2" you are gonna feel a little challenged at times carrying it in some areas, those long barrels like to bounce off of things.
Checkin' wind and makin' smoke.
That's how I roll...

I've pretty well decided I'm going to buy a complete AR in .223.  I don't have any spare parts laying around at home, so I'd have to mail order everything.

My logic is by the time I build a 6.5 grendel or other from ground up, I'm going to have a chunk of $ into it, enough that I could just buy a complete then add an upper and I still get the .223 for a yote gun.

right now I'm looking at the SIG one at Walmart for 900 ish bucks.  I really like the green magpul stuff on it, and I think it'd be a decent off the rack shooter for yotes.  It has like a 1:7 twist so it'd make a decent Cougar gun with the heavier 70g or so bullets, I also read pretty tight groups down range.

I'll buy other uppers for it later, but it'd be a good start.

What would you AR guys buy as your first complete?

Prices in Big R are a little rough, I'll check em out though.

I think it'll be hard to beat walmarts price on that sigarms m400 enhanced

I have an Olympic K3B Carbine in 5.56 that is dead nuts balls on accurate.  I like to issue eviction notices to 'Yotes with it on my property.  Very effective.  Optics, EoTech 512.

They had two different styles, the M400 with carry handle - plain jane looking for good price but I can't remember exactly so I won't quote it.
Then they had the magpul version, tan or green flattop

very nice rifle, it was at that 900 mark

I have used many .223/556 for work and competition and I would say that for your money and piece of mind buying I would buy COLT, NOVESKE,  LMT or Bravo Company (in that order) .   I really put my weapons through their paces typically and have great luck with all mentioned.   Please keep in mind that this is one man's humble opinion and expressed written consent is required to complain or disagree with my opinion....ahahhahahaha!!! :twocents: :IBCOOL:
