Jewelry from the North
« on: November 24, 2012, 08:48:41 AM »
Had a nice little surprise for my Black Friday. Hunting with my two sons yesterday shot a Mallard in the dekes. As I was wading back and showing my son the duck I saw the leg with a nice early Xmas present. First band for me. Great day!!

Ok here is the story and you wont believe it. I ran the numbers and found out where he was banded. His band was from Fairview, Alberta. This makes his migration to Washington 821 Miles. Now for the good part. He was hatched in 2002 or earlier. This make him  at least ten. That means the band has flown 16,000 miles if he only winters here in Washington. Since he probably goes to California or Mexico, that could mean the band has 32,000 miles on it. Wow!!

I got my first ever non-mallard a pintail this year near Spokane. A couple years ago I got 2 mallards in one group but they were banded a few years apart and in differant areas WA & AB. I'd rather be lucky than good!

I did that same thing Last year, but I shot them an hour or 2 apart, one from Alberta, one from Alaska.  Lucky for sure

Way to go!

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."
