OP asked what kind of duck his friend shot.
Answer - Redhead.

The assumptions you people have made make you look like idiots.

I agree with everyone about identifying, 100%. I just kinda chuckle at how everyone bashes people on here when they post somethin stupid, and I'm not sayin they don't need a lecture. I think at one point in our lives, if not more, we have done something  slightly stupid... You'd think people just would'nt post it. lol.

THats actually a good suggestion, unlike lighting a guy up because he asked a question.   Try to learn something around here and get BLASTED for it.  Talk about IDing your target before you shoot.

I had a warden look at some ducks on my tailgate one day, he didn't know what the drake pintail was (of course it was in eclipse).

I had an eclisped Widgeon Drake last time I was out, the Gamie at the launch was trying to tell me it was a new species, and told me I should see about having it named after the lake or my name... I couldn't help but LOL... he didn't find it funny...

I also like the idea of pic thread on Duck ID'ing...

So here's the thing, a ticket for over the limit or 'closed' species sticks with you. If you get another they get worse. It will also get you turned around at the Canadian border. I know one bird sounds small but it has consequences. I hate guys who don't put forth enough effort to ID their target.

The op's buddy shot it, and nether could ID it?

Does the average fowler have any idea what they are shooting?

I myself am new the the waterfowl sport, and still have a little trouble ID'ing waterfowl in the air. If I cant confirm what it is I dont shoot, I also like to watch them fly, look at the belly in mid air and the back and let them land to help ID them, allows you to see the characteristics of the bids from all angles.  To many times have i been out with guys and a duck flys by and the first thing they say is "what kind of bird is that?", or the common "its a mallard" when actually its a ringneck or widgon.  :chuckle:
I like the way they do it in some hunting areas with geese and ID'ing them. Maybe you should have to pass an ID course before hunting ducks as well.

I agree with ensuring you're ID'ing waterfowl properly, but as far as looks go, It falls under "duck" in the regs on the Westside. Has the same body build as say a Mallard or Widgeon, so without actually seeing the color, which most waterfowlers know is sometimes impossible, you may not "KNOW" what it is that you're shooting, just that it is a duck. It looks nothing like a Sea Duck, so therefore if you're limit is low, or you havent shot anything yet, it's gonna get shot. Not to say WE HAVE ALL DONE it before, but if all of us 'Upstanding-20/20-eagle eye vision-top notch waterfowlers' DO PROPERLY ID the bird... chances are the guy in the next blind is gonna shoot it.

Just don't see how when a guy asks other huintin guys a question, suddenly we are all Gamies, or Hunting Jesus, then vindicate him for the little things... just my  :twocents:

If your using the color of the bird your nuts. Every bird looks different in flight. Wether it's wing beats or the shape of the bird. Even the way the fly is different.

Redheads have a two bird limit a day, in some places they are thick as fleas. Very easy to shoot over your limit.

 :yeah: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
