Just for "sea ducks" on the west side, includes scoters, harlequins, golden eyes, and old squaw.

That’s it?  That’s all the bashing he gets?

Duck ID posts used to result in at least 5 pages of beratement .

It’s a kinder, gentler waterfowl board these days.

I have had the sea duck cards for years. Just curious why divers needed something special?

There seems to be a bunch of guys on this board that don't comprehend the regs, or any sort of duck ID.

Every time I go to bust a guys balls it gets locked or deleted.

I can see how some birds are tough to ID, but this one is beyond easy. There is a pic of it in the bird regs!!!!!

I agree with ensuring you're ID'ing waterfowl properly, but as far as looks go, It falls under "duck" in the regs on the Westside. Has the same body build as say a Mallard or Widgeon, so without actually seeing the color, which most waterfowlers know is sometimes impossible, you may not "KNOW" what it is that you're shooting, just that it is a duck. It looks nothing like a Sea Duck, so therefore if you're limit is low, or you havent shot anything yet, it's gonna get shot. Not to say WE HAVE ALL DONE it before, but if all of us 'Upstanding-20/20-eagle eye vision-top notch waterfowlers' DO PROPERLY ID the bird... chances are the guy in the next blind is gonna shoot it.

Just don't see how when a guy asks other huintin guys a question, suddenly we are all Gamies, or Hunting Jesus, then vindicate him for the little things... just my  :twocents:

There are a lot of ways to figure out what it is by looking around on the Internet, game regs, waterfowl ID books.  When one shoots something and doesn't know what they shot, then places it on a public forum they should get knock along the side of the head.  Just plane stupid and asking for trouble.  I see these threads every season.  If they are smart enough to create a profile and play around on the Internet, they should have some sort of clue their are better approaches to shooting first and asking questions later.
If it's to dark to ID birds, wait until it gets light.  Watch wing speed, flight formation, calls "sounds" they make and shape.  Scouting locations will also give you a good idea of what the area is holding for birds.  If you see birds you can't ID, take a picture while still alive and post it.  Guys will help them out.  If you shoot it just because it flies, then post it one deserves to get talked to!

The waterfowl bashing has temporarily been moved to the Upland Birds board,  Stay Tuned, the Waterfowl board will be back to normal as soon as the "hunter who peppered us" topic gets locked.   :chuckle:

Yeah.. I am not sure how this get asked here either. The redhead is not uncommon.. and even though there may not be a significant amount here... EVERY identification guide will include a redhead practically on the first page.

If your using the color of the bird your nuts. Every bird looks different in flight. Wether it's wing beats or the shape of the bird. Even the way the fly is different.

Redheads have a two bird limit a day, in some places they are thick as fleas. Very easy to shoot over your limit.

I'd just as soon the next guy shoots the illegal bird as me.

The importance you put on bird ID is up to you,  but it makes me cringe watching guys blaze away at ducks not really knowing what they are.  Be a bummer to nail something that is closed. :twocents:

I can't stop shaking my head, every time I read this post.

Shooting first and asking questions second is worthy of a face punch. Know what you are killing.

I've not shot close ducks because I couldn't identify them (I'm still new and learning silhouettes.)

he did note he didn't shoot it.  it was his friends.   My friends have shot things I didn't know what were but they did.  Might be the case here.

I wouldn't go so far as to say his friend needs to be punched in the face.. sheesh. But we don't need to ignore poor hunting practices either. I have a hard time with identification while in flight at times..  due to a number of different reasons. A pair of binos have been helpful and if you are new to duck hunting, can give you some practice identifying ducks at a distance.
