capping tool
« on: February 24, 2013, 10:53:37 AM »
Just wondering if there is a capping tool for musket caps? Do you just use the tabs on them and do you bend those tabs down when you put them on the nipple?

Knight sells cappers for musket caps. the only place I can find them is on there site. You don't have to do anything to the tabs they slide right in the capper
It's better to have a gun and not need it than to need one and not have it.                                                                             Local 66 sheetmetal workers

I just use my fingers...they are big enough to put on with your fingers.  I tried the one knight sells but it didnt work for me...maybe I am capper challenged.

Just leave the tabs alone...the cap sticks real good to your nipple.  Better then 110 caps.
And musket caps are easier to remove once shot.
If you love something you will set it free, if it don't come home, hunt it down and kill it.

I have used 2 diffrent tools and had trouble feeding to caps with wings. I did find some German musket caps with out wings. They work great in the tool. They are slit down the sides. Its a little hard to remove, but once fired they flare out and are easy drop off.

You can also buy the musket caps without the flanges as well.  :twocents:

I also just use my fingers, in the heat of the moment I don't have to worry about looking or reaching for a tool. They come off easily with fingers alone.

I have been thinking about switching to the Mag #11's for the fact that they do fit tighter.

I highly recomend NOT to get the plastic ones. I had so many issues with them. The brass one is the way to go, and they work for the caps without flanges as well.

I have been thinking about switching to the Mag #11's for the fact that they do fit tighter.

#11 Magnum Caps is all that I use, I tried the musket cap for several season both with the wings and without the wings.
Musket cap just had a couple of things that i really did not like.  Often they would not stay on the nipple post unless you squeezed them which meant handling them and the othe fact I did not like are the the dang slits up the side of the cap.

With a #11 Mag cap installed on a good nipple and using a capper if you install the animal correctly you will never have to worry about the cap coming off, in fact you will have to pry it off unless you shoot it off, but it becomes nearly water proof by stretching the convolutions in the side of the cap - not water collecting slits...

This the nipple that i have found to get the tightest seal...

Here are a couple of other pics that might interest you...

This Ted Cash is the capper I prefer for hunting - it really compact and if you look at the tip you can see it has a piece of solid brass the the cap rests against when you are installing it on the post so you can relly push it on tight and stretch the convolutions in the wall of the #11 Mag... Make sure you get #11 mag caps or Dyniment Nobel !075+.  They produce the same heat as does a Musket cap.

This is a picture of the various caps that i have used... You can see the slits in the both style Musket caps and the convolutions in the walls of the #11 caps.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I don't use mine to take the cap off I use it to put them on...
