Training session went well!

Took Boomer out to miller's ranch on Tuesday.  Found our 5 plus a bonus bird! First bird he was a little unsure about, defeathered it a bit before he finally brought it to me.  After that he had solid retrieves.  Put up two nice points and the rest being flushes.  He hunted pretty close, listened well, and worked the cover good.  I think I'll go one more time before they shut down.

Nice,
Defeathered birds is why you keep a pup/ young dog on a long lead the first hunt or 2. 
Long lead keeps you in control if you have not yet or or not going to collar condition.

Keep after it!
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

I've used a long lead when doing working in an open field with dummies and such, but when beating the brush, i didn't think it would work very well.  Most of the birds he retieved during the regular season were ducks in the water so it was a littel easier to control as well. 

Hoping to get him out to bust some real birds before the end of March.

Excellent!  Great pics-thanks for the post.  I think I'm going to take my 11 mo BLF down for a little work as well.  Miller Ranch has been recommended to me by most folks I talk to.  I assume you were happy with your experience as well...

Thanks guys. Originally I wanted just Boom but the wife put the -er on the end, so he's boom in the field.

He's 7 months old, so he was a little outmatched when I took him out this winter but he did get a few flushes under his belt in the regular season.

I was pretty happy with millers ranch. My only complaint is that the grass parts of the field are pretty beating down from the winter and snow so you pretty much just work the edges. I will def go there again though  :tup:
