#7's bugles were just a little too "flutey" for me for them to win it. Not to take away anything from the caller but it just didn't have that rasp that the bulls I hear have. But that's just my  :twocents:

All elk sound different, no one is going to sound the exact same as the other one. There were a few entries that just sounded abit to much one toned. But this is just my opinion and in this case it doesn't matter.  :chuckle: Good luck to all that entered and happy hunting this year. May your tags all get notched! Hunt hard and try to keep the wind in your favor.

I still use the same bugle tube that i bought about 15 years ago. It has a "flutey" sound to it. The newer tubes have so much more resonance.
Edit* I am not caller #7 but can relate to the flutey sound. It sounded like he used a external for cow calls and maybe a terminator. I would be happy to have him call for me anyday. Nice work #7

This is a really interesting contest. You can almost hear if a caller was in a small room, warehouse, outside, or if they recorded with their phone or better audio equipment. The diaphram vs. Externals are apparent also. I think it was #6 sounded like he was in the trees. Very realistic  I really wanted to experiment with the freestyle portion but chose not to this year.

I agree that all elk are going to sound different and I was just giving some feedback on why I thought caller 7 wouldn't win the contest is all. I also agree with elk247 that it definitely sounded like a terminator type bugle. I won't deny that a lot of bulls fall victim to this type of call every year. Just to me they don't sound "elky" enough to win an elk calling contest.  But again..just my opinion

That's a great looking bull!! Congrats...

I am guessing that you are #7 Tommy? I definately was not trying offend you in any way or knock the effectiveness of your calling in the elk woods. I have had a few bulls fall victim to what I would refer to as a "flutey" sounding bugle, and it was very effective!!

Like I said..I never said those calls don't work..lots of elk die to those type of calls every year. You asked for opinions and what people thought so that's what I gave you. It's not like I was attacking you. I had a feeling from the get-go that you were caller 7 and if it works for you, stick with it. There's more than one way to skin a cat..and to call elk..congrats on the bull and keep it up.
