Leverevolution
« on: October 28, 2008, 09:37:14 PM »
hey I just traded a Rem 700 7mag that I won from MDF for a 98 cent raffle ticket for a beautiful Marlin 1895 SS 45/70 guide gun. I am wanting info about hornady's leverevolution ammo. Is it as good as they make it out to be? :dunno: I am looking to take it elk hunting this weekend as a back up gun. And need to purchase some ammo for it before I head out.

Highly recommended.  Use it on my 30/30 and it is impressive.  Good luck

I dont know anything on the 45/70 loads, but the 30/30 shoot really good out of my rifle a my Contender. I dont think they are going to re-invent the wheel, but they do seem to be accurate, only game I have tried it on was a coyote, but he decided he wasnt interested in being an autopsy speciman.... :chuckle: (I missed him).  Anyhow I think that would be a good load to start with.  Another good load to try would be the Garrett  Sledgehammer, might need to order them though as Ive never seen them in any gun shops.Good score on the gun btw, Ive wanted one of them since they came out. Real make a real good elk/bear thumper in the timber.

Love them. They turned my son's .30-.30 into "magnum" rifle. Excellent accuracy and twice the smack down, good cartridge

I’ll be the odd man out.

I tried it in my 30/30 and I don’t like it.  They don’t group any better than any other factory ammo and they shoot way to the left.  Usually I can switch from one grain bullet to another and only have to adjust the elevation.

So check garrett Sledgehammer online? Any place were prices are cheaper than the other? I think I am going to try a few different and see which ones the gun likes to spit. My neighbor came over with his and we put some down range in the backyard it is a rifle that you fall in love with after the first shot..

i shoot hornady 300 grain hollowpoints from mine, cant remember the powder right now, but they shoot real good for me. sighted in 4 inches high at 100 yards and about 4 inches low at 200 yards... and they hit like a freight train at both ends :IBCOOL: if you want the data let me know.
i have wanted to try the leverevo ammo but my load shoots too good to change right now, and besides then i would have to the the leverevo scope to match ;) i have the 1895 (note guide model) they sure lay the smack down in the timber!

Yea, shake up that load for me I will check it out. I can't wait to get it in the timber this weekend. I would love to turn something inside out...  I am going to pick up a BX of the leverev for the week. It sure is fun to shoot.

Well, I'll try again as I just "timed out".  I can't speak w/authority using gummy tips w/my 45-70 guide gun.  I am using it right now w/those Leverolution rounds to fill my 2d bear tag this year.  I really can't believe it, but last month my guide gun off the bench put the 325 grain gummy tips 1" high at 50 yds & 100 yds right on!  The groups at 100 yds were OK since I was using a cheap red dot sight.  The sight works for me in the woods, especially late in the day.  The range results gave me a lot of confidence.  I did drop a bear w/this gun/sight combo a few years ago using reloads w/458 Win slugs (Hornady) that I had to file a flat spot w/a disc sander.  Kinda hokey, but it worked.

Dropped a 250-300# bear last May using my 22" barrel 450 Marlin using gummy tips.  Tremendous knock down power.  Highly recommend them for accuracy & energy on tgt.

I'm working on my relatives who have family heirlooms (336 Marlins in 35 Rem & 32 Win Spl).  Now being a part of history I love to "bow hunt" w/a levergun!

Hornady 300 grain flat point hollow point with IMR 4198 cant remember the charge but will post it when i get home tonight. i would be taking my "freight train" elk hunting this year with me but i didn't have any time to load up dome shells. so i'll take the 7 :chuckle:

Great Ammo. I have a scope on my 30-30 94 and they group better then any ammo I've shot to date.

Yea I put some down range in the backyard and they are pretty flat shooting compared to the 350 flat nose that the neighbor gave me to shoot. Do they sell the rounds in bulk to reload yet? Anybody know?

The Hornaday ammo is fine, I am thinking about going back to the 150gr Rem ammo as it is much cheaper. I usualy only use the Marlin 30-30 hunting in Pennsylvania for Whitetails. My rifle dose not shoot the Hornadays any better than the Rem's.
