Gun Safe Recommendation?
«
on:
November 29, 2013, 11:09:31 AM »
So I see there are many different gun safes out there from $700-several thousand. I am looking for a gun safe but don't know why to chose one over the other. I don't have an arsenal, and am looking for a safe to keep my guns and ammo out of my children's hands and hopefully keep them a little less likely to be stolen. I don't ever see having more than 20 guns. I know there are the fire ratings and electronic locks that increase the cost but are these really needed if your just looking to be safer and more secure? Is the $700 Costco safe not a good product? Just curious why I would spend $3000 if I don't have collectors items.
Thanks for any feedback and recommendations.

My buddy just got a gun safe, and he thanked me for pointing out that a scoped rifle counts as 2 guns in the size criteria. He went to Coastal, and told the salesperson that the safe had to be Made in the USA. The salesperson helped him pick one out, and assured him that Liberty Safes were all made in the USA. He went to pick it up, and on the box were big letters saying "Made in China". He complained to the manager of the store, and they gave him the next size up, a Fat Boy, at no extra cost. Reminder: The Liberty safes are made in the USA, but the Liberty Centurion line is NOT!

If I hadn't seen the MADE IN CHINA on the carton my 22-gun Liberty Centurion safe was in, I would not know the difference. I got the safe after I got looking around the house at the gun in every corner, and decided to make my house less attractive to thieves.
It was all a buddy and I could do to skid the box out of the garage and into the shop, on a smooth concrete floor, and I decided right then that if someone could carry it out full of guns, I wasn't going to stop him!
Avoid those Stack-On safes. They're junk!

Thanks for the advice on safe brands and vendors. How about choosing top of the line versus low or middle? A fire rating of 2.5 hours for $5000 doesn't seem worth the cost when you can get the 45 minute safe for $999. Not many fires that I've seen last more than 45 minutes? It looks like the cost is very fire rating dependent. What bells and whistles can't you live without? If I buy the $1500 safe will I quickly be disappointed? Sorry for all the questions. Have a feeling my wife would rather cut costs, and I can't blame her if the return on investment is not there.

I got the Franklin series Liberty Safe last year and couldn't be any happier. I paid around $1700 with free delivery. For $20 they anchored it to the garage floor for me. It has a 60min fire rating, door accessory panel, motion sensor lights and a interior power outlet to plug in a dehumidifier. The shelving is top notch quality and you can move them around to accommodate more guns. You won't be disappointed with Liberty.

I have the winchester safe from costco! I really like it! Love the electronic key pad, my dad has a safe with the dial and I hated that one!

I have the Bighorn safe from Costco and really like it. They delivered it to my garage and placed it exactly where I wanted it. We bought it when they were on sale for $400 off (around $800-$900). They go on sale quite often and the guy at Costco told us that they have very few complaints about the Bighorn and has the lowest return rate of all of their safes.

I got a 41 gun Summit Yukon from nwsafe. What the sales guy told me is buy a safe you can grow into. Many people buy a safe that works for them now but out grow it down the line. Then they have to buy either a larger one or just another one.

I bought a Safari from COSTCO for around $500 delivered. Does what I need it to. Take the advice of getting one that's too big for you now. It won't be for long.
