Closed reed call sticking?
« on: August 10, 2014, 06:08:42 PM »
I went out calling yesterday and my call started sticking after about 20 minutes into the sequence. I've just been using an orange Primos closed Mylar reed call that does fawn distress, cottontail, and coyote. cheap, plastic body. Is there a way to clean it when it sticks or should I just invest in a better call?

Also, is there a way to tune this call other than sliding the o-ring up or down the reed?

Thank you,

Drew

Below is a link to the call I have Rick. If you are looking for a picture of the reed I could take one and post it.

And above is a link to a video of the call being used by someone who actually knows how to use it, unlike myself. Haha. I did call that bear in the other day with it though... :)

 :yeah:

... or spitting. LOL
Sometimes condensation will build up and make it stick.

Do you mean push it all the way down towards the call body? Also, I haven't tried using it without the mouth piece like the above video shows. Didn't know that was an option.

Thank you.

I may have damaged it last night trying to fix it because I tried to hold the reed up a bit and wipe under it thinking it had gotten a bunch of spit in there. We were about 6 miles back with just the one call so I was pretty pissed when it was sticking. haha.  I just tried using it and it's pretty sticky still.

I don't see a creese. Just removed the reed assembly from the call body and cleaned it with a piece of tissue carefully. Still sticky.

Ah ha! Upon closer inspection I think I messed it up last night out in the field. I disassembled the reed assembly and there is actually a creese where the two halves of the reed assembly clamp down on the reed. it does still stick up a bit though.

I'm guessing I messed it up right? It was probably sticking before due to condensation and now it's sticking due to the creese at the sandwich point that I created. :(

I can get some calls out of it but it is very inconsistent and will stick every few seconds.

Here's a pic of the reed assembly:

Here's a pic that shows the creese in the reed. Creese is right where the two halves of the reed assembly clamp down on reed.

And that's a great looking call you have there Rick. I'll have to order one real soon.
