What are you wanting to pull out of a river?

For Tuesday we are practically to the point of going for anything that can wiggle the pole tip!  :chuckle:

We were hoping to catch salmon, I found a guide on the peninsula with an open day but he only has room for two in the boat, we are a group of three now. My nephew is bringing his 12 yr son, they are on the road now headed to my place.

If the wind does not cooperate and your not dead set on the salt, I took customers on trips a week ago on the Cowlitz with Dan Houfek. The fishing was fantastic for steelhead with quality fish. It's getting late but based off those trips, its not over. If interested, give him a call 509-965-1721, yes he's from the east side but he knows the river.

On Tuesday...instead of fishing take them up to Hurricane Ridge for a quick hike...awesome place to just soak in the Olympics...especially if you have family from out of state with you. And its a lot closer to Sequim than the Columbia or Cowlits.

We decided to hang around another day and wait for the Tuesday winds to pass. We've got a trip planned to fish on Wednesday at Westport, thanks to everyone who has offered advice. Sounds like the kings are hitting, I've never caught a king so I'm very excited to go, heading west in the morning. Thanks again to everyone who tried to help us, it's much appreciated.

Don't back up from the deckhand with the net. Just reel up to the swivel and raise your rod tip right into the net :) DONT BACK AWAY FROM THE DECKHAND WITH THE NET.

I've been on the ocean quite a few times on charters and with friends and only gotten sick once, but my nephew and his son have never been on the ocean. I'm going to get some Dramamine just to try and play it safe.  :chuckle:

I've always caught lots of silvers, if I get a king it will be my first.

Good luck! Hope you get your Kings! Looking forward to the pictures. I'll be in Westport Friday, going out on the Blue Eyes. Its great you can keep 2 kings now, hope the boat targets them.

Are you going on a charter trip or with a friend??

Whoever it is you are going with, hopefully, they will head south because that's where the action is.  There are a few fish here and there up the north beach but it has been very spotty.  The boat ride south will be considerably longer but they are catching some of the seasons best sized kings down south out in deeper water.

If you do get hooked in to a nice King you'll know it pretty quickly.  Keep the line tight.  Don't reel against him if they decide to run.  If you aren't sure of your proper drag setting have someone check it for you.  Be patient, don't try and horse them in, just keep that line tight and let the fish do its thing.  You get nice 20+lb King on and bring it over the rail you'll be ruined and never want to catch a Coho again.  The smile on your face will last all day!  If you're doing a charter trip, listen to your deckhand.  They'll be as much help to you as anyone.

Also, two very important things to remember, one of them was already mentioned, don't back up from the rail once you get the fish along side the boat.  #2, after the fish is netted, give the line some slack.  Your job is done, no need to keep a tight line after it's in the net.  I've had fished actually pulled back out of the net by the person holding the rod because they didn't slack the line.  I got a hook stuffed in the palm of my hand because they didn't slack the line off and when the boat rolled and the rod holder stepped back the hook and line snapped up and hooked me just under my thumb.

It gets deeper faster when you go south so even if you're fishing 300ft, you won't be as far off shore as if you were straight out fishing 300ft.

I'm sure you'll have great trip.  There is nothing like hooking into a big King salmon and feeling them shake that big ole head.  Ummmm, nothing like it!!

Dale,
Let us know how you do. Looks like I am headed that way tomorrow and might try to find a spot on a boat if fishing and weather are decent.
