Any one in the Yakima valley into fly fishing that doesn't mind helping a newbie out? Basics mainly, casting, fly id, etc. But mostly the casting lol.

I've fly fished for over 20yrs (but also gear fish) and have helped plenty of new guys out.  feel free to PM me questions.  I'm also in the Seattle area, so that won't help much.  But you can also look into washingtonflyfishing.com as a good resource and local contacts.

Most people don't understand the mechanics of the cast you have to let the fly line load the rod before you bring it back out in front of you.
A good rule is to pull back on the line and count 123 before you go forward 123 this will let the line load the rod properly before you reverse the cast.
After some practice you will know how long to wait you will feel fly line load the rod before you start forward from 1 o'clock to 9 o'clock.

The other general rule is when you pull back you go from nine to 1 o'clock with your arm accelerating 0 to 60 per say. So it's kind of a quick jerking motion from nine to 1 o'clock then wait for the rod to load or Count 123 before going forward from 1 o'clock to 9 o'clock.

The fly line will lay out on the water very nice you won't have tangles coming from backward to forward as that's from not waiting for the line to fully go back and stretched tight.

It can be a steep learning curve.  An empty football field can be a great help.  Cut the hook off of a #6 whatever and have at it.  Yard markers make great targets for distance and accuracy skills.  Little creeks with cooperative little fish hone water reading and line management skills.  Patience is a virtue.
