Bears and blackpowder?
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:56:43 PM »
Any of you ever use your blackpowder rifle for black bear?  Just wondering.  I posted a similar thread on the "bear" section of the forum and thought it might be better here.  I know that we still have to use all lead projectiles.  Someone warned me against the 405 grain powerbelts I have been using; I guess they are 'too soft" and flatten out too quickly for deep penetration.  I would love to hear from some folks on this forum that have taken bear with their smokepole.  i love using open-sights and I love my blackpowder rifle.  i would truly enjoy the bear hunt more if I could use it effectively.  However, I want to make sure i can put the animal down quickly and humanely.  Any advice?  Thanks all.  Jeff

I went out a few times for bear with my .54 round ball shooter.  Never got a shot though but I plan on trying again.  Soft or not, a big hunk of lead in the right spot should do the job.

Alright!  Sweet story.  Anyone else with a blackpowder bear?  I think I am goingto give this  try.  I just love my Black Diamond T/C.  Can't wait to take a BIG bear...or any bear for that matter.

There are three bullets that I recommend trying.  The Harvester bullet seems to be harder than average, the buffalo bullet is not a bad choice and if you can find them anymore, try the Mushroom Express.  That bullet is a round hollow nose cone swaged over a solid base.  A buddy of mine shot a bedded cow elk over on the coast several years ago with this bullet in .54.  The elk was looking right at him from her bed at about 60 yards.  Punched it right in the center of the chest and flipped her over on her back!! :chuckle: :chuckle:
