Desert
« on: November 27, 2015, 09:31:49 AM »
Got drawn for a second deer tag in the desert that's comin up in a few weeks was wondering where a good camping spot is? We have a big Alaskan alaknak wall tent with ropes and everything it's about 20x30 which is the only reason I'm askin cause we have a big tent. Thanks in advance

I'd say it depends on what you want. We've camped at Mardon and Potholes St. Park a number of times- which would be close. People camp at the end of C Rd. SE off O'Sullivan Dam Rd. on state land- not too sure I'd want to leave a camp unoccupied there for any length of time.

I have that tag also. 2 son's had it last year. Fun area to hunt. Not sure when we will be going, but maybe we'll see you.

You just wanting to make a camping trip out of it? A lot of work setting up a big camp when you will be done hunting in about 5 minutes. Lol

May not be as easy as it's reputation suggests. When my sons had the tags last year, we honestly saw zero does standing around waiting to be shot. Pretty much all the deer we saw were away from the roads and wary.

I am a camping kind of person but when me and my wife had tag we stayed in motel simply because there is no fire wood to cut and it is super cold.  Sucks being in a wall tent without the wood stove.  If you can make 400 yard shots you should have no problem filling tag quickly.  If you can't stay low and out of sight and watch your wind.  As stated above the does are very wary.  We got within 50 yards of many nice bucks but getting under 600yards from the does was not as easy.  You really got to stay out of their view or they will bust you.

Hank shoot me a text and I will get you dialed in.  Hunting it right now with a bow.  Lots of does and I mean lots.  It will not be an issue.

It was 9 with a north wind and your nuts if you camp in this stuff:)

Hiking way in was the best part of our hunt last year. Lot's of cool country to explore. Found a homemade toilet right on top of a ridge way in the middle of that block. Spotted it from a long way off and thought, "That looks like a toilet". Came down the ridge a few hours later and sure enough, it was a toilet. No, we didn't use it...
