JC Mink Line
« on: January 23, 2016, 12:46:42 PM »

There are two animals I real like going after and that is coyote and mink
There is always something about trapping mink that I have always liked
I waited until the first of the year and than when out and set a small line
I have one trap out under this bridge where I pick up a couple mink every year
This year I have caught five mink in this one location in since January 2nd or 3rd
two females and three bucks ~ all nice looking mahogany brown

I think I might have to set a bigger line in the next few weeks
I hope some others are trapping mink too.

Nice, I need to get my traps out there.  Being sick for the first half of the month has sucked.

Congratulations. I would love to catch a few mink. I've read beaver and muskrat for bait. Doesn't look like you covered your trap up? I have a 7x7x24 havaheart that I have set with a bit of beaver meat on the edge of a swampy creek area. There is a set of train tracks that cross it. I have the trap along the edge of the tracks close to the water edge covered in grass. Thinking about moving it to where the tracks cross the creek. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.

What do you bait mink with?

I make my own bait and Lures.  What I like to use for mink is fish.  I also use a small amount of mink gland on a stick.  Once I get the first mink it seems like they spray their mink odor.  Once I dispatch it in the water I will shake / snap the water with its ordo on the ara where I just caught it.  I think the odor of the mink attracts others.  Like all animals they know who lives in their area. So if one mink has been in there, I think the others will check out what their fiend ent in there for.

It sounds like your in the right area.  Moving under where the train crosses the tracks would be good to.  I don't find any difference in covering it.  If I do cover my traps, I put only a little brush or grass on it.  Reason is I want the smell to permeate the air.  I want them to smell the odor.  Grab a handful of duck, goose or chicken feathers and throw them in there also to attract the mink over to your set.  A little Fish oil won't hurt either.  If you have raccoon in the area, shake down the trap.
